When I was 20 I inherited a rare neuromuscular
disorder. The nerves overstimulate otherwise
healthy bowels and cause 12-25 BMs everyday,
including 2-3 overnight. I am continent but get
very little warning, so I always have to be near a
bathroom. I always have small BMs that vary
between hard and soft stools. It usually takes 15
min just to have one BM. I also have frequent
painful cramps that cause sweating and shaking.
The condition is debilitating but not actually
dangerous.
In the last 5 ...
Hi Peeps
I hope someone can put me straight on this topic.
I will at some stage have to have a colostomy for
enduring FI following multiple surgeries on rectum
for disease and recurrant fistula. I have now been
told I have bladder and bowel (no suprise there)
prolapse. This means the clock is starting to tick
for an op of sorts.
Will they do the bladder hook up op at the same
time as the colostomy? I would much prefer it if
it was all done in one hit but have not had the
chance to speak to ...
Have not been on this site for awhile. Had a
successful reversal surgery over a year ago. All
went well and am back to normal. Thanks to all for
the prayers and support.
Robert from OC CA.
I just had to share this. I just started
colostomy irrigation. I was always getting fecal
impactions that were very painful. By irrigating
I don't get the impactions. I used to take
MiraLax, which would take 4-5 days to work and
even then I would not be fully emptied out. I
have to say irrigation is not for everyone. On
YouTube there is a video of a man from (I think)
Australia who irrigates. His video is very
informative. Irrigation even allows me to wear a
stoma cap instead of a pouch ...
I'm over 2 years down the line from my stoma, and
still hate "Colin" with a vengence,
still smelly, painful and a nuisance, but a few
months ago after getting a bad cold, I sneezed
and had terrible pain, but that's sort of normal
for me, as I'm a paraplegic, however , since then
"Harold" appeared, and now sticks out
about 5 inches on top of my horrible fat tummy.
When I eventually showed my GP she told me to see
my wonderful stoma nurses at Glan Clwyd Hospital

Hi! I am considering having a colostomy and would
like to know the good, the bad and the ugly. I
have a spinal cord injury at the C6-7 level so
have no control over my bowel. It has been 16
years now and I have been manually evacuating my
bowels, but now things are changing and I am
considering a colostomy. Right now I do manual
evacuation every other night and it can take up to
2 hours to complete so it really cuts into what I
can do socially. I am hoping that the colostomy
will give me mo...

Hello everyone,
I had a question about reversal of a colostomy. I
have had my colostomy since I was born and had it
reversed just a year into life. Then after another
year or so things were not working and I was
getting enemas and rashes so they gave it to me
once again. Now at 24 I want to give it another
try and see if it's possibly. Does anyone have
stories of having it their whole life and then
getting a reversal and hopefully successfully??
I also have something called VATER syndrome, i...
Had my colostomy reversed as well as a colostomy
hernia repaired a few months ago after having it
for around six months. Re connect surgery was
successful and I am feeling pretty normal. A very
bad case of diverticulitis brought it all on. I
ignored a bad stomach ache that finally turned
severe. I spent a month total in the hospital on
strong antibiotics attempting to clear up the
infection to no avail. My colon ruptered during
the third week and had to have a section of colon
removed. Had I loo...
I am fairly new to this site and have posted
comments to other's threads and now am posting my
own story. My son who is 38 years old and
developmentally handicapped is having his reversal
done on Monday, March 26th.
He is pretty nervous about this but happy to be
having it done. It has been a very long road for
him since August 18/11 when he took extremely ill
with Fournier's Gangrene and had massive abdominal
surgery on that date. They did a transverse to let
his rectal area heal. His spincte...
Is this much trouble comon place?
In Feb 2010, they discovered a non-cancerous tumor
between my colon and my bladder. I also had
diverticulitis.
They removed a the tumor and 8 inches of my colon
in May 2010. Four days later my colon came back
apart. Emergency surgery and I woke up with a bag
on my stomach. I was in the VA hospital for a
whole month.
I also lost 50 pounds while I was in the hospital.
I went from 215 pounds to 165. Great way to loose
weight, but I don't recommend it to anyo...
Hello all,
I have a permanent colostomy since 1983 due
to rectal cancer (just starting to get used to
it!!!) Seriously it does not give me much trouble,
skin problems sometimes, but soon remedied,
irrigate from time to time, when the fancy takes
me or if I wish to be bag free for a special
occasion, i.e flying on holiday, business in
another country etc. Six months ago was diagnosed
with polymyalgia rheumatica; prognosis about two
to three years. The medication for this condition

Hi Everyone. I had my colostomy reversal on Jan.
30th and am still in the hospital. All indications
so far are that it will be successful. The pain
isn't as bad as the initial surgery in October so
I am hoping my recovery will be better as well. I
had a low sigmoid ostomy following a diverticular
abscess that would not respond to draining or
antibiotics. It has been quite an ordeal. I will
keep you posted on my daily progress if that would
be helpful to those of you who are scheduled for
this. ...
My reversal and hernia surgery is tomorrow, Feb
3rd! I've been on the clear liquid diet since
yesterday at 4:00 so I'm feeling quite hungry
about now. It's funny how food looks and smells
so great when you can't have it. I'm nervous and
anxious for tomorrow to come. I pray all will go
well and all of you on this site have helped me
with all of your encouragement and information. I
am truly thankful to you all. I'll post again as
soon as I'm able after my surgery and let you know
how it all...
Hi I am 42 years old I have a supra pubic catheter
and have been told by my colorectal surgeon that I
need a end colostomy for nerve damage to bladder
and bowel. At the moment I have to manually
evacuate my bowel which is horrendous a have three
surgeries to repair pouches in the anterior and
posteria vaginal wall. I have been told they can't
repair it anymore and now need the colostomy. I
have been told it is no different to having
catheter. I need to ask and get some answers to

This is the first time I have posted on this site.
I've been reading it for a while and all of you
have helped me feel less like a freak and given me
hope. I started with this whole thing last May
with pain which I chose to ignore because I was
afraid of cancer. Many people in my family have
had cancer and I was three weeks away from my
son's wedding.
When it got bad and I went to a specialist, he
said he couldn't believe I was still functioning
because I had an abcess which was infected. ...
I had emergency surgery a week ago. Had a portion
of colon removed due to rupture from
diverticulitis. Released from the hosp on Friday
with only a small amount of liquid output from
stoma. Since I've been home, I have been eating
more solid foods but there has been absolutely no
output, besides a small amount of gas. No liquids
or other output. My appetite is terrible because I
feel too full to eat. How long does it take to see
output? I still have cramps and some abdominal
pain, but my incisio...

I am a neebie and was wondering if anyone has a
colostomy due to a rectovaginal fistula. I have
had the colostomy since June 2007 and have tried
on 4 different attempts to have the fistula
corrected. In January I am due to have another
repair attempt using the gracilas muscle from my
leg, then after recovery and if it holds, have the
colostomy reversal along with a hernia repair. I
am very apprehensive about this attempt to repair
and really wonder should I go through with it or

Hi all, I am a newbie, but i have been reading all
the posts that i can, as i need to hear about
otheres problems so mine may not seem so bad. I
had emergency surgery in 2009 for a blockage in
the intestines, which turned out to be a cancerous
tumor. I woke up 7 days later with severe
peritionitis and a colostomy. I was living in
Florida at the time, but after 8 weeks in rehab my
son wanted me to return to NJ to live with him and
hope to get better medical care up here. Well I

Night collection system for colostomy. I was
unable to sleep more than about 45 minutes without
having to get up and empty my colostomy appliance.
I have been trying to find a commercial product
like the night drainage system used for urostomy
patients but none exists for colostomy patients.
I made my own with respitory hose, Holister two
piece bag system, a large pickle jar, baggie,
rubber bands and tape. Has anyone found a
commercial product or created something similar?
Hi Everyone,
I am one of the silent followers on the site and
it is so great to read everyone's blogs even if we
don't ever answer. One thing that has been
concerning me for a while is that lots of folks
talk about eating or not eating certain foods.
After my surgery the colorectal nurse just said
not to eat too many salted peanuts in one go! But
no other diet advise was given. I don't think I
have had too many issues (aside from unladylike
amounts of wind in the first few months but my

Had my colostomy reconnected 6 weeks ago after
having a bag for 5 months. Everything is close to
back to normal. I am so grateful for all of the
concerns and prayers.
Hi, does anyone out ther have any experience of
urine problems after a colostomy. I had a bladder
fistula removed at the same time and just wondered
if anybody also had problems in this.? The main
problem is that it goes absolutely everywhere and
I hadn't mentioned this to anybody until this
morning when I was moaning to a friend about it,
and she used to care for a lady that had the same
problem after having the op, so it made me wonder
if it was a common problem. If so, any solutions?

I had an 'emergency' colostomy in May 2010, I was
told I had diverticulitis, turns out I had a
ruptured appendix causing periotinitis. I wore my
colostomy (or it wore me) for 11 months. I had the
reversal in April 2011, they also repaired a fair
sized parastomal hernia. Six months later, I still
have 'accidents', just when I think it's gas...I
have a mess. There is always a urgency when I have
to go, so knowing where facilities are is always a
top priority. Carrying extra clothes is a
neccesit...
Hello, I have posted before but have not had any
replies. I had my ostomy in 2007 so you would
think I had it just about down now. However, I
have had problems since the onset. First of all,
I have Irritable Bowel Syndrome and find that this
affects me as much now as before my ostomy --
maybe even worst. I have eliminated sodas, wheat,
milk, and several other things from my diet to try
and help with the many diahhrea episodes I have.
I recently had a hernia repaired and hoped this

My surgeon tells me you can't get a reversal after
four years. Anyone know how long you can wait, i
didn't know there was a limit. Mine was done it
Dec 2005, he said i'm at a high risk and i have
three large hernias too from the surgery, which
makes my belly pertrude on the side. I still want
to have more information on this and maybe get
this done one of these days. I have Lupus, thats
what makes it serious to have the surgery, had a

Is there such a thing as an ostomy diet?
I am barely getting any output from my colostomy
in at least a month, and I have absolutely no
appetite.
Last year I was in hospital with what they thought
was a partial small bowel obstruction.
My "diet" has been small amount of baby
oatmeal and some coffee at breakfast: maybe cup of
soup for lunch. Small amount of yogurt, jars of
baby fruit.
I tried to eat small amounts of well-cooked green
beans with the carrots today.
I've tried to dri...
I have a friend who had a very serious case of
colorectal cancer. Much of his tissue was removed
leaving him with a colostomy. Are there any
clinical trials that use stem cells to grow new
organs in that area? Where should someone go to

I have a question to ask but its not for me its
for my friend.
I have urostomy and ileostomy , my friend has
urostomy and colostomy . He has phoned me for
advice because since yesterday his colostomy bag
is empty yet he is eating as usual.
Can anyone relate to this or give some comment . I
myself have never had an empty bag.
Your replies would be of great importance to me.
Thank you

Good morning all. Need some feedback please. I
will be commencing my one year anniversary the end
of the month with my colostomy.
Ended up in the hospital due to an allergic
reaction last week. Problem I'm having is with
the steroids and beta blockers etc, it is totally
drying my system out. My output is really thick
and seems like I have gas and I'm bloated all day.
I'm drinking LOTS of fluids to help flush but
I've never had this happen before.

I need some advice on what to expect and
encouragement. I have crohns disease which was
very active in the decending colon and rectum. I
had a permanent colostomy formed and my decending
colon and rectum removed with the hope that it
would cure all my problems. My remaining
tranverse colon was deemed to be unaffected by the
crohns. That surgery was two years ago and since
then the crohns has appeared in my remaining colon
and I also have a severe parastomal hernia which

Hi
I am very new to the ostomy world and am finding
it all very amusing. I had an emergency colostomy
done on the 11th November 6 days after seeing a
specialist up at the emergency room at hospital. I
knew I was in deep trouble with constipation, but
I did not expect to have to have a colostomy as
the first choice solution. that spun me out! but
at that point I was at the shoot me or fix me
stage from the pain and that bullet was sure
looking attractive.
I was so upset and so confronted ...

Well here is the story I am 71 going to be 72 next

pointing sideways so the flange would not stay on
and my skin blistered, so we went back in and he
gave me a colostomy where the mucas fistula was.
Everything has been greatbut have so many

Hi, I am new to the site and had a few questions.
I had to have a colostomy just over a year ago due

colostomy I have had two revisions. For some
reason my stoma keeps closing up. The doctor tried
to put a scope through it to see what the problem
was, but they could not even get the scope in an
inch or two. I also have colonic bowel, (very slow

Hi friends, I need some help. I have had a

I was "diagnosed" with Fibromyalgia
several months ago. I just now began taking the
medication, because frankly, I don't have the

My neurologist put me on Lyrica. I haven't decided
if I like it or not or if I will continue it.
Does anyone else out there have this same issue or
have you been diagnosed?

It looks like I will need to make a decision

if anyone out there had any experience of having
both? What are the pros and cons, which is the
easiest to manage etc etc.... Also whether or not
to have my rectum removed? How does tha...

time to time has stool. The third is a tiny
colostomy outlet that backs up and has resulted in
three or four ilius situations. The stool that
comes from there is large, very firm and dry.
Most of the back ups seem to come after I've had a
surgery or some pro...
Hi, there, I have responded to two mates with
questions on this subject so far. All I can say
is I had mine done July 1, 2009. I had the take
down on the colostomy, 2 hernias and what my
surgeon said was a 'tummy tuck'. He did extensive
surgery on me.
Was in the hospital 5 days until they are sure
there are bowel sounds. After I got home the
first few weeks were not the best. Not all my
problems were from the surgery though. Two weeks
after the surgery they took out the staples, told

I've recently had a colostomy, and I'm having
trouble with the bag leaking all the time. I have
cerebral palsy and don't think that the doctors
and nurses are really taking into account that my
lifestyle is ver different because of this. Is
there anyone out there who either has CP or knows
someone who does who also has a colostomy?
Any advice on apparatus would be great, thanks!
Hi , my name is pippa and I am looking for advise
and other people's opinion on colostomy reversal
& hernia repair it will be getting done all at
the same time, which I think is good.
I had a colostomy last July through emergency
surgery its a long story so will get to the point

organs were starting to close down lots and lots
of complications anyway am having my reversal in

Hey, I just realized that Lily Allen is singing
about Colostomy Bags in her 'Window shopper' song.
Here are the lyrics ... and the video:
The bottom feels so much better than the top!
So much better!
Nan you're a window shopper
Taking a look but you never buy
Nan you're a window shopper
You won't pick it up if it's over a fiver
Nan you're a window shopper
Get on the bus 'cause you still can't drive
Nan you're a window shopper
Mad as fuck, only just alive
You get up in the mo...
We are proud to present Joy Hooper's video on
'What is colostomy?'
From Joy:
As a Certified Wound, Ostomy & Continence
nurse, I feel that I have been given a very unique
calling and duty to provide care and education to
patients and their families. I view my nursing as
my own personal ministry, and it is by far the
most meaningful and enjoyable challenge that I
have ever had. I thoroughly enjoy every minute
that I spend giving patient care, teaching, and
helping my clients adjust to an...
Hi There
I am a 36 year old female married to a 39 year old
man who has a colostomy after being diagnosed with
colon cancer 5 years ago. Our lives are pretty
normal and we go about things the best we can but
once in a while the situation gets to me.
I don't know anyone else with an ostomy so I
wonder how other people deal with it.
I think that we have lost friends and a big chunk
of our social life since this happened. Not in an
overt way but subconciously over the years. I feel
its a little ...
Hi There
I am a 36 year old female married to a 39 year old
man who has a colostomy after being diagnosed with
colon cancer 5 years ago. Since he has had the
colostomy he has ended up in the hospital with an
abdominal blockage every year, 7-10 times a year.
Its really hard to say what triggers it, could be
stress, exhaustion, constipation, dehydration,
eating something bad, etc, etc. We never know when
it can happen and it comes on suddenly and very
fast. He usually gets very sick and has to go...
Apologies if I do this incorrectly-- I am not an
expert at posting. I am the daughter of a woman
who will be 100 (one hundred) years old next week,
and has had a colostomy for 9 years. She has
never had formed stools since the colostomy; the
best it has ever been for her is the consistency
of peanut butter as she puts it. In the last
couple of weeks she has gotten into a situation
--it started I guess when she was not having
bowel movements for several days, and then had a
series of very liqu...
hi there,
Anyone out there who has went through the reversal
of their colostomy. I have heard good and bad
regarding this. I think I would like to hear some
more of the good before I commit myself to have
this procedure.
The colostomy itself was not too bad except that I
had septia and peritonitis and almost died twice.
Now that that is all over and done with I am
scared to go back and have surgery again, even
though I hear it is not as bad as what happened
before.
If you have any po...
Hi all
was wondering if you can help me, i have a
colostomy now for 3 months and will have it for a
further 3 months and then will have it reversed.
I have been off work for these first 3 months but
will be returning next week and am absolutely
terrified of my stoma 'popping' at the wrong
moment like in a meeting etc - how does one
prevent this from happening ??? No one knows at
work about my stoma as dont feel confident enough
to explain it all to them as they all my age and
guys. Food wi...
Could I please have benefit of experience on stool
softeners? I am taking a new Rx med that is
really causing me problems. I am drinking lots of
water but I still need help! Naturally, I would
like something that doesn't create the opposite
problem. Thank you!
Hi all
I am new to this board and colostomy etc. I had
an operation to remove my endometriosis which went
wrong and they perforated my bowel and now I have
a temporary colostomy until May. It has just gone
8 weeks since I have had my colostomy and my stoma
nurse said that I have a small hernia above my
stoma. I then have been googling this online and
have come across a prolapse hernia etc? Is it
common for people to get hernia's? also I have
noticed since this hernia my stoma is pertrudi...
A FORMER NEIGHBOR CALLED THE FIRE DEPT. ON ME
BECAUSE SHE SMELLED INCENSE COMING FROM MY
APARTMENT
WHEN THE FIRE DEPT GUYS FOUND OUT THEY HAD BEEN
CALLED FOR SOMETHING SOOO STUPID THEY GAVE HER A
TICKET AND KNOCKED ON MY DOOR TO LET ME KNOW AND
ASKED ME IF I WANTED TO PRESS CHARGES FOR
HARRASSMENT. I SAID NO AND THEY LEFT.
AFTER THEY LEFT, I WENT TO THIS WOMAN'S DOOR, LET
THE AIR OUT OF MY COLOSTOMY BAG, KNOCKED ON HER
DOOR AND WHEN SHE ANSWERED I TOLD HER "NOW

I am just reaching the point where I am able to go
out socially for brief periods of time and would
like within another month or six weeks to be able
to get through a six-hour plane trip. I'd like to
hear what people carry in their "emergency
kit", advice on what and how much should
always be with you, and what kind of thing you
pack it all into. I've searched but haven't really
found any useful advice on this topic...
I had a sigmoid colostomy on July 31st and am
currently home after skilled nursing care and am
having home health care (under managed Medicare).
During the first three weeks, I had a small amount
of mucous discharge from the "inactive"
rectum (my sphincter is slightly open) but no
serious problem with that. Then suddenly a couple
days ago I waked up and wondered why I stank so
bad! It had nothing to do with my pouch, etc., but
the mucous discharge had greatly increased and I
had to rev...
Everything I read says be careful not to get your
pouch wet, but no one has given me any explanation
of how to accomplish this when showering. I'm a
new ostomate and my "schedule" is not
predictable enough to risk showering with my pouch
removed! Any advice would be welcome.
hi my name is jenni and i am 30 years old. i have
had my colostomy since last august. It was last
resort after having surgery to try to correct a
prolapsed rectum. My surgeon said that the
sphincter muscles had gone competely. Anyway i am
now just about used to dealing with the colostomy
, although i have to change it more regular than i
would like-mostly three times a day. Is this
normal? Anyway my problem now is that i am
continually incontinent with my badder. I have to
wear prescription pa...
Hello Im Richard. I am a relatively new member,
but also new to using this message board. I really
need some help please.
Ive had my colostomy a long time and am used to
living with it now. However, I suffer from Urge
Incontinence, which was caused by the colostomy
surgery. Ive got by with a good system for coping
with it, but its worsening. Ive got the medical
side covered, been seen by urologist and about to
be seen in the continence clinic, but feel it
would really help if I could chat...
Dear friends:
I had surgery for colorectal cancer on Aug 22 and
have been recovering nicely since then. Since the
tumor in my descending colon was too close to my
rectum, the surgeon decided to remove my rectum
and replace it with a colostomy. Prior to surgery
I had full radiation treatment (23 sessions).
Everything went well, the effects were temporary
and I am left with 6 of the original 7 feet of my
colon. I use a colostomy bag (which can be quite
expensive, as you all know).
After tw...
