Ostomy Memories of the Internet

THE INTERNET IS A DOUBLE-EDGED SWORD with the high prospect of both favorable as well as unfavorable consequences. It can be beneficial, as for its research potential, or problematic, like when you waste hours online playing games, as I do playing Scrabble. Then there are the social websites that fail to responsibly monitor their content, such as Facebook, with the result that its users absorb tons of untrue and dangerous information. The First Amendment does not require private companies to allow such unrestrained BS. Still, when I need to look up something quickly, the Internet is a boon to finding facts. [Who here recalls facts?] It seems that the entire wealth of human knowledge has somehow transitioned onto the Internet, and all one need do is click on the correct keyboard key and – voilá—everything from Socrates to Shakespeare to sugar substitutes is there for you. But care must be taken. “A wealth of information,” wrote Herbert Simon way back in 1971, “creates a poverty of attention.” And here we are, where the wonders of news bits, sound bites, and websites have caused a mass shortening of the human attention span. Meaning no disrespect, but it’s no accident that I keep these posts short.

Hello HenryM.

I am having trouble with the comupter and internet technology at the moment, so your post has come at an appropriate time for me to take a step back and contemplate whether I could do without it altogether.

Best wishes

Bill
