Good Information

Thu Aug 26, 2021 12:45 am

Here is a site I found that has more information in one place than I have seen. It has an index guide about the subjects it has and the page number. It starts from what you need to do before surgery. It It has pictures and explains everything about most every subject. It tells about all kind of problems and what to do about them, how to solve problems about leaking, about all kind of products. There is so much info I can't tell it all. A lot of things many of you know already, but there are some things and products I have not heard of. It is a very long read, but you can skim over a lot of it but there is a lot of things that may be useful. For the newer people with ostomies of all kind will find it very useful. Here is one thing that I had not herd of.

Karaya Powder - K-Gum™ Karaya for Peristomal Skin Protection
K-Gum powder has three sizes:

1 ounce
3 ounce
16 ounce
Karaya ostomy powder is most often used on open or denuded skin, the powder provides an absorptive and protective layer, allowing the wet skin to dry before applying the baseplate. K-Gum (karaya gum powder) is a remarkable powder that absorbs moisture in open, weepy, skin and promotes granulation in open wounds. Karaya powder is made from the highest quality karaya gum powder available and has the highest standards of uniformity, cleanliness, and performance.

Karaya is plant based and a natrual hydrocolloid. It has excellent skin care properties.
How To Use Karaya Powder:
After bathing, pat dry the peri-stomal skin (skin around the stoma)

Dust K-Gum stoma powder onto skin peri-stomal skin that is red or irritated. Karaya will protect raw and weeping skin by creating a sticky gel. Let powder dry or crust

Apply the skin barrier/ostomy appliance as normal

These are the top 5 issues ostomates face:

1. Dating and relationships
2. Concealing the pouch
3. Foods to eat and avoid
4. Losing or gaining weight
5. Pouch ballooning

Hiya Lovely:  I've used Karaya powder for decades, perhaps unnecessarily, I'm not sure.  My skin is in good shape, but I always spritz a bit of K-powder around the stoma when I change, wipe some Cavilon No-Sting Barrier Film on it (around the stoma), and I'm protected in case I have any leakage.  Stay well.  HenryM

it is a pouch with vitamin e that ia advertised as good /kind to the skin, replenishs and moisturises , anyhow as i said i do not use barrier spray and i am ok with it. being in the uk and getting my supplies from the NHS (national health service) i was told if i had these pouchs then i would not get the barrier spray as it would not be needed. i do have acolostomy so whether it would be suitable for an ilieostomy which i believe is more watery i do not know. i order mine through coloplast charter and the the company that make them ? are pelican healthcare who do have a website. hope this is useful for you.patrick

This booklet came in my ConvaTec sample box. My colostomy is five weeks old. Stella, as I call her, has behaved herself for the most part. I will keep this powder in mind for the future.
