This is unbelievable!  I understand why tsi agents must screen ostomies but they should show some respect.  If this ever happens to me, since I have 2 bags, they are gonna get it both barrells! (LOL..like a double barrel shotgun)

I’ve only been on this site a little bit, I hardly know how to navigate it, LOL! I just want to say that everyone seems so kind and supportive to each of the members and it’s not only helpful, it makes me happy that there really are so many nice people in this world that can sometimes feel so bleak and cold. I didn’t even know about this site until I found it by accident. I think the hospital staff should bring it to their patients’ attention. Thanks to all, even if you’re just listening!

I've been registered for a few months now but finally today got my full membership. Since I'm flying to visit my daughter and grandson for his 2nd b'day in a couple of weeks, this thread was the  first one to catch my eye.

I've had a urostomy for five years and have gone through airport security several times since the surgery, but not since the new enhanced full body scans and pat-down measures went into effect. Boy, can I empathise with Dr Sawyer, though. It's bad enough when the adhesive decides to give out all on its own when you are out and about, but to have it happen by another human's carelessness and thoughtlessness is unconscionable (I have no idea if I spelled that right, it's late and I'm tired). The article gives a link to check on the TSA's procedures for people with disabilities. Guess I'd better check that out.

Thanks for the heads up.

This article is enough to scare the bejesus out of any ostomate, I don't think I would have handled it quite as gracefully as Dr Sawyer.

I have been through the full body scanners and pat downs at the airport, I was fortunate to have an older female guard who had knowledge of ostomies with my last experience, but next time I may not be so lucky.

I find it really frustrating because my ileostomy has given me the health and confidence to actually venture out travelling again, and now I'm considered a terrorist threat, crikey!

Be interesting to see what happens next time I head on home, like the 30+ hour flights aren't enough to deal with, I may have to contend with over-zealous ignorant security personnel, oh well, onwards and upwards, "good character building" as my old boss used to say!

"No worries" and "She'll be right"!

I guess I was lucky when I flew from Detroit to Spokane, Washington. I had taken out my wallet, etc and went through the scanner but set it off. The agent asked if I had a metal hip or something else that might trigger the alarm. I said no and showed my ostomy bag, saying this was the only surgery I had. She asked what it was and I told her. Another agent asked if I had any change in my pocket and I thought I had gotten it all, but when I checked again, I came across more change. So I emptied the pocket and went through again, and cleared security. I was never asked to go to another area or be asked for a pat down. It was Oct. 2 when I was flying. Coming  home on Oct. 9th, I had no problems at Spokane Airport. Before I left home to drive to Detroit, I was concerned about the pouch and what if they suspected something more about it. When I checked my flight on line, I did fill in the information for TSA a week before I left.  I can't remember if it asked about assisstive devices or not though.

I stumbled upon this article this morning during a break at work, and immediately lost my appetite for the Mandarin orange I was eating. I am shocked, disgusted, and honestly quite horrified by what I read in that article. What in the world is going on here? Do we know if that gentleman has lodged a formal complaint, whether or not we can sign a petition demanding apologies and possible consolations for that man? Any info at all? If the victim in this gross violation has any recourse, or plans any kind of action, then I sure would like to know about it.

If anything like that had happened to my Tyler at the airport when we flew to Vegas recently....I just don't know how I would have reacted. They might have had to tazer me, because I'd probably have thrown a grade-A hissy fit on those jerks, and I'm not kidding.

This is news that should disturb not only those people who are members of the ostomy communities, but their loved ones as well! Anyone who loves someone, or even knows someone who lives with an ostomy should be completely outraged. I really hope airport security addresses this, and offers that man a serious apology.

Tiggy, about 5 yrs ago I was bagged by one of these neanderthals riight in Vancouver airport. His wand hit my bag, and despite of any thing I said to him, (English 2nd language) he wanted to see right there and now. So I went for the shock value , pulled up my shirt and lowered my pants, 10ft away from the lineup at the Xray.
It had the desired effect, and I didn't give a shit at that point because ,this moron didn't have the IQ of a red brick
