Has anybody had hernia surgery prior to reversal, and if so, how did it go?

Interesting question. My understanding is that hernia repair (if needed) is attempted simultaneously during the reversal procedure or after. Parastomal hernia repair by itself has inconsistent results.

If I was a relative newbie with an ostomy, I have no doubt that this site would be very helpful to me.  The members are quick to respond to questions and issues and they are filled with experience.  When I joined, I already had a lifetime with an ostomy, so I just regard it as a place to meet and communicate with other folks similarly situated.  Either way, it is a good site.

Don't do it! It's a trap! Unless, of course, you have pains and issues, then... so be it.

Gather research, kiddo. The results of repair are quite grim.

Yes, you are correct about parastomal hernia repair being done at the time of reversal; however, my reversal is uncertain at this time and, in all likelihood, will not happen. I just wanted to know if anyone on this site had this done.

Thanks so much for your comment.

No pain, really; just trying to make inquiries and gather info from folks on here who might have undergone this surgery.

Thanks for your input, warrior.

You are welcome. One of the many mantras I hear.

"If it ain't broke, don't fix it."

I think Dexie B. is considering this repair and surgery. She has pain.

And there is another considering it, but I forgot who.

Another person, a man who was a mechanic, had it done. We spoke, being a mechanic myself.

"Forced retirement due to restrictions lifting."

Sorry, fudge that! I ain't ready for retirement.

Don't feel pressured to get it done. Wear a belt all the time. Keep an eye on it, lift lightly, and avoid it if you can.

Yes, I had this done this past March. Ileostomy reversal, parastomal hernia repaired. Ostomy moved to the left side of the abdomen, and now I have a colostomy. Another reason for this surgery was that my stoma had become prolapsed. Not bad, but the surgery corrected this and my hernia. No problem with the reversal or repair. I am still getting used to a colostomy. It's a lot different than my ileostomy. For me, my issues are minor. Pancaking and stuff like that. Good luck. I hope it goes well for you.

Hello - I did not have a parastomal hernia repair prior to reversal - but I did have one fixed during my reversal surgery. My reversal and hernia repair went great, but then, as Warrior mentioned, I got a new hernia. It's in a different place, and I need an abdominal wall reconstruction - which I am putting off because I just don't have the energy right now for another surgery. But the parastomal hernia I had has not come back... I was told they would not fix it prior to my reversal surgery unless it started causing problems. It never did. My new hernia doesn't really hurt either - it's just a weird pressure sometimes, and of course, it's never nice having a bulge! So I'll probably do that surgery next year....

Yeah. I've heard the same thing. They might get the hernia repaired, but they leave a giant mess that can't be sealed. So you have leakage problems from then on.

I'm fairly new to this website, so I'm sure I've missed many good topics. Your comment on leakage after a parastomal hernia repair concerns me. I'm having my parastomal hernia repaired next month because of leakage now. Since my abdomen is bulging out, things don't adhere right, and I get a lot of leakage unless I tape it up a lot with ABD pads. What's the point of surgery if it's going to leak afterward too?

Hi. I'm not sure about the leakage issues you are saying you get from the repaired hernia.

I don't believe I have heard

of that at all.

I have heard the surgery limits your lifting ability.

I heard infections occur. The mesh they use sometimes doesn't hold up or becomes another issue.

But no, I can't say leaks were an issue or ever mentioned after hernia repair.

The repair itself is at issue. That's my understanding. A few of us have hernias, but we feel surgery won't have good results. We have no pain and can do whatever we want now.

Yes, that bulge is quite annoying, but I don't have any pain, really. I have ordered a belt that I hope will help. I probably should have done this sooner. I told my surgeon I had been very careful not to lift anything heavy, no strenuous exercise, etc., and he told me, unfortunately, any movement that involves your abdominal muscles is all it takes to cause a hernia: stretching, reaching, coughing, etc. There is just so much they don't tell you. It's a shame.

Thank you so much for your comments.

That sounds terrible. I see my new surgeon on 12-2 (was 11-4, but a scheduling conflict caused it to be moved up), and I am eager to hear his thoughts.

Thank you for your comment!

Thank you for your reply! I am so glad your surgery went well. Initially, I was to have an ileostomy, but my small intestines were too damaged, so I ended up with a colostomy. Your thoughts on stoma paste? Do you use it? I started out using it because my stoma nurse told me to, but I stopped after a while just because it's so damn sticky and yucky, and I didn't think it was doing anything. Thanks.

Well, that doesn't sound good at all. 😔

I go in on Monday for colonoscopy reversal and multiple hernias to be repaired. They are doing stomach reconstruction on the way out with biological mesh. I will keep you all posted.
