Oy Vey, I keep rolling on my stomach when I’m sleeping! The first time it happened I awoke in the morning with poop ??'? that got squeezed out of the filter hole like tooth paste. Thankfully my output was thick so only a little got on the sheets... so of course I had to change the whole thing out. Then the night before last, my wife woke me up, again sleeping on my stomach. There was no apparent leaks, until yesterday I felt burning on my skin. Low and behold a leak, albeit a small one, barely visible on the side, just enough to burn my skin. I’m at a loss at what to do.? Last night I used a belt, I think it helped. I’m open to any suggestions . I have an ileostomy, located on the on the right slightly over my bellybutton.

Very helpful

David,

I would suggest using a pouch that doesn't have a filter.  They're annoying to me anyways.  The pouches are pretty durable so even if you roll over on your stomach, the likelyhood of a blow out is slim if you're using a 1 piece.  I can't say the same for a 2 piece system since I've never used them.

Try to finish your last meal of the day within 5 hours of going to sleep so most of the output is gone by that time.  I sometimes wake up in the night if I haven't followed that rule with a football size pouch.  Since I live alone, I burp the gas out of it while I'm lying down, then get up to empty it.

Good Evening Bob and All,

I checked my email and saw new postings. That's when I usually visit the site. I've recently met a few others who have developed UC and have made contact with them. I've directed them to this site. I also use the site to look up concerns they or I have. This site has been unusually helpful to me. I have seen questions and concerns of others posted. After I scroll down and see similar comments that I would make, I don't comment. As for social media interest, I have a Facebook account (due to work). As of this date, I have one Facebook Friend (and don't even know how that happened). I find the content here more relevant to my life. Then again, I'm old school. If I want to see how a friend is doing I just make a call.

Stay Safe and Sane all. Back to the hockey game,

SharkFan

The one piece solution sounds like a good one. I have quite a few of them, but I thought they all come with filters?

Also what do you do when your skin gets really sore?

I run around with no pouch for days.just baby wipes and sandwich bags holding moisture back then your wrap or belt wrap.holds it all back.no pouch to clean.

Rozanskyism, when I get irritated skin around the stoma from a leak, I use Anascept by Anacapa Technologies. It comes in gel or spray form. I get it online from jet.com. It is expensive (about $30.00 for a 3 oz tube of gel or an 8 oz spray bottle) but very well worth it, as it usually lasts me for a number of months. It requires very little each time, and it kills all bacteria, even C. diff and MRSA.

If I am changing due to an unexpected leak and not taking a shower, I use the spray and gauze to clean up and proceed with my regular routine. If it is after my daily shower and if I have irritated skin from any cause, I put the gel on clean skin, rub it in, and allow it to dry fully. I don't usually have an active stoma first thing in the morning, but if I do and can't leave it uncovered for any length of time, I rub the Anascept in, wipe the excess off with gauze, making sure the skin is dry. Then I use a barrier wipe on the skin to help protect it from future leaks. I apply the SenSura Mio one-piece, which is the appliance I prefer. I don't care for the filter, but I prefer the Mio to any other system I have tried, so I put up with the filter. I don't use wafers (like slims, etc.) or paste, so basically my daily routine involves one barrier wipe and the Mio, but if it is very humid, I will use either tape or the Brava elastic barrier strips by Coloplast for extra strength in helping the Mio to stay adhered. I believe that less is more, but I refuse not to change daily. I have heard people say your skin can't take the daily change, but I have not had any problems with skin issues from changing daily. I prefer to shower naked daily; it's just a personal choice. It is more costly, though, as most insurance and Medicare will only cover 20 changes monthly, so out of pocket can be costly, but I have found that by not using a lot of the other "regular" products (which I have found mostly unnecessary), the difference in my monthly costs is worthwhile and manageable.

Just FYI, I receive no compensation from Anacapa Technologies for promoting their product; I have just found it extremely helpful in caring for any kind of wound, so I share the data with those it could help. I have even turned my PCP on to it, and she has found it an excellent product. And as costly as it is, it requires very little and lasts me quite a while. Since using it, I have found that I have very few skin irritations. Changing daily also seems to help with that issue. Also, if you're using a filtered appliance, use the little tag they supply to put over the vent. It helps. Good luck.

Peace

Nancy
