The Art Of Quilting

Posted by SallyNBC

I come from a long line of quilters...an art that was passed down through the women in my family. Mostly done by hand...I think I was the first to use a sewing machine when putting the top together. Once the top is done, the layers are put in big quilt frames to be quilted. It was always a social event around the frame. Fond memories.

In my family quilts have been made through out the years and given as gifts... Nana made all of us girls in the family a 'Little Umbrella Girl' quilt for our 13th birthday. Mom made each of us a wedding quilt. All were made of old clothes no longer wearable. It was kind of fun to look at the patchwork quilt and say "Hey that was my old skirt!". LOL I remember one time I was going through a rough patch in life...away from my family...my sister made me a patchwork lap quilt...she called it my hug quilt so I would have hugs whenever I needed them. The comfort of quilts.

When I was in the hospital hostel doing radiation and chemo treatments...there was a lovely quilt on my bed. There was a tag on it that said it had been donated by someone. How wonderful to have something so homey in such a sterile environment. So now my sister and I are making some 'comfort quilts' to donate. In every stitch we will sew in our love and hope that whoever receives it will find some comfort.  {Insert heart here }

AlexT : My next door neighbor owns her own quilting business out of her home. It amazes me how many people have quilts done.

Bill : Hello Sunflower111.
Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts and feelings about the art of quilting. This is just the sort of pastime that I have been searching for to include in my upcoming book of rhymes on 'kindness'.
I hope my rhyme does justice to your quilting efforts and reflects the kindness behind the activity as well as the comfort gifted to the recipients.

Best wishes
Bill

QUILTING & KINDNESS.

One might not think at a first glance
that quilting would provide a chance
to be kind to others and
offer out a helping hand.

But looking deeper at this art
and the people taking part,
we find that what they think and do
shows they wish to be kind to you.

Their motivation from the start
comes from deep within their heart,
with no sign of malevolence
yet oozes with benevolence.

It's said, with every stitch they sew,
they hope a seed of love will grow
and transfer to the ones who use
the kindly quilts that they peruse.

For as they sew their quilts they know
that love and hope will surely flow
through the work done on each quilt
into the friendships they have built.

These quilts are built to comfort folks,
so help to ease those heavy yokes
and personal burdens if they're ill,
or wrap around to keep out chill.

A quilt that's made with love will be
a kind and loving entity,
which has a flair for hugging where
the quilters can show that they care.

A quilt is like a gift of hope
to help another person cope,
so, there is nothing springs to mind
that beats a quilt for being kind.

Bill : Hello Sunflower.
This is one of those concepts that deserve a bit more thought and maybe some more rhyme. Hence, I have added another eight verses to highlight how I (and presumably others), Have taken quilts for granted, and not given them the respect they deserve.
Enjoy!
Best wishes
Bill

QUILTING & KINDNESS. (continued ->)

Within my role as an escort
upon the welfare bus transport,
I'm often wrapping people in
quilts of silk and fine linen.

This is a job that I enjoy,
because it offers up a ploy
to show a little kindness where
this one small act may show we care.

I like the thought that kindness shown,
is something that I wish to own
as part of what I do and say
as I live and work each day.

I've always felt it's down to me
to be kind with humility,
so, every little thing I do
will entail kindness through and through.

For years, we've used quilts on the bus,
yet not seen what's in front of us
in terms of tools of kindness where
they're made to show that people care.

In the past these quilts have been
so often used, but never seen
in terms of what's gone into it
for the user's benefit.

Now, when I see a quilt handmade,
I will recall the part that's played
by those kind quilters trying to
gift kindnesses in what they do.

But from now on, you may expect
these quilts will have much more respect,
and I will make sure people know
from where their warmth and care did grow.
