10th Anniversary of Ostomy Awareness Day Celebration

Ostomy Awareness Day is a special occasion dedicated to raising awareness about ostomies and the people who live with them. The year 2020 marked the 10th anniversary of this event, and it was a time for the ostomy community to come together and share their experiences with the wider public. The aim is to help others understand that people with ostomies are just like everyone else, with only a few changes in their plumbing, so to speak. Here are some insights and advice on how to approach this day:

1. The main goal is to make the general public aware that people with ostomies are just like them, only with some plumbing changes. This understanding can help reduce reactions of shock or rude comments.

2. Acceptance and support are key. The intention is not to have public demonstrations but to foster understanding and acceptance.

3. Many groups have dedicated days, like Grandparents Day, and it's believed that ostomates deserve one as well.

4. Messaging is important. Some feel that the word "celebration" might not be the best choice, as "awareness" better captures the mixed emotions many ostomates have about their surgeries.

5. The purpose of the day is to remind the wider population that ostomies are an invisible disability. Greater understanding can help reduce stigma when ostomates use handicap stalls or parking spaces, even if they appear outwardly able-bodied.

6. Focus on education rather than festivity. Instead of partying, activities should aim to inform friends, co-workers, and the public about what an ostomy is and why acceptance is important.
