Colostomy blockage after eating cherries?

This topic is about a person who has had a colostomy for nine months and is experiencing a slowdown in stoma output after eating fresh cherries. They haven't had any output for 48 hours, which is unusual for them, although they are still passing gas and don't feel any pain or nausea. They are concerned about whether the cherry skins might have caused a blockage and are looking for advice on what to do next.

Here are some helpful suggestions and insights:

1. Seek professional help:
- Try to get in touch with an ostomy or stoma nurse as soon as possible. Some supply companies offer access to nurses by phone.

2. Encourage movement:
- Engage in light exercise, like walking, to help stimulate bowel movement.

3. Use warm fluids:
- Drinking warm water can help initiate output.

4. Sugary cola stimulation (for those who can tolerate caffeine):
- Drinking a small bottle of full-sugar Coca-Cola, preferably warm, in one go might help.
- Another person found relief by drinking about six cans of Pepsi and lying on their side, which led to rapid output. This might not be suitable for everyone.

5. Over-the-counter measures:
- Taking 1–2 ibuprofen tablets can reduce intestinal swelling. Follow this with a dose of Miralax (polyethylene glycol 3350) and plenty of water, and use a heating pad on the abdomen.
- To prevent hard stools, consider taking a half-dose of Miralax every other day.

6. Normal variation reassurance:
- It's not uncommon for some people to go 24–72 hours with minimal output, followed by a large clearing episode. Hard pellets often come before a return to normal flow.

7. Food triggers:
- High-fiber foods, like corn in a burrito bowl, have been known to cause temporary slow-downs for others with a colostomy.
