Does Long-Term Ileostomy Impact Liver Enzyme Levels?

This topic is about someone who has had an ileostomy for 20 years and has recently found out that their liver enzyme levels are higher than normal. They are concerned about whether having an ileostomy for a long time could be affecting their liver, especially since they do not drink alcohol.

Here are some helpful insights and advice:

1. Medical experts currently believe there is no direct, proven link between having an ileostomy and elevated liver enzymes. There are many other benign or unrelated medical reasons that could cause an increase in liver enzymes.

2. It is important for doctors to look into other possible causes for the elevated liver enzymes. Regular check-ups and monitoring by a healthcare professional are recommended to keep an eye on the situation.

3. Some doctors think there might be a connection between inflammatory bowel diseases, like ulcerative colitis, and liver problems that develop later on. However, this connection has not been scientifically proven, and liver issues can occur independently of having ostomy surgery.
