Dealing with Burning Sensation Around My Stoma

This topic is about dealing with a burning sensation around the stoma, which might be due to a yeast infection, also known as a candida infection. The person experiencing this issue is using Hollister Adapt Paste and is considering trying Hollister Adapt Barrier Rings for better skin protection. They are curious if others have faced similar issues. Here are some helpful insights and advice:

1. Recurrent candida infections can happen. Some people with ostomies have experienced raw, bleeding, or shrinking patches around the stoma, which were linked to candida infections.

2. Hollister Adapt Barrier Rings might be beneficial. Many users have found that these rings help reduce irritation and shrink raw patches when used instead of paste alone.

3. It's important to rule out leakage and poor fit first:
- Regularly measure your stoma to ensure the fit is correct.
- Make sure the opening of the skin barrier fits snugly around the stoma.
- If the shape of your abdomen or stoma has changed, consider using convex skin barriers, paste, or barrier rings.

4. Before reapplying the pouch, manage any damaged skin by lightly dusting Hollister Premium Powder (or a similar product) over open areas. Stop using the powder once the skin has healed.

5. Change the pouch proactively and immediately if you notice any output getting under the barrier.

6. If you need antifungal treatment, use an antifungal powder instead of a cream to ensure the pouch adheres properly.

7. If you experience a rash or itching from tape, consider using tape-free ostomy systems that rely on an adhesive skin barrier.

8. Seek professional help promptly if you have persistent leakage, a rash, or are unsure about the fit of your products. You can contact an Enterostomal Therapy (ET) or Wound, Ostomy, and Continence (WOC) nurse for assistance. The Wound, Ostomy, Continence Nurses Society (WOCN) can be reached at 1-888-224-9626.

9. For product and sample assistance, you can contact Hollister Incorporated at 1-800-323-4060 or visit their website at www.hollister.com.
