Ostomy Shape Change - Normal at 3 Months Post-Surgery?

After having colostomy surgery, it's not uncommon to notice changes in your stoma's shape. For instance, one person observed that their stoma, initially oval, became more rounded about three months post-surgery. This can raise questions about whether such changes are normal and what steps to take next.

Here are some helpful insights and advice:

1. It's perfectly normal for your stoma's size and shape to change, even years after surgery. So, don't worry if you notice these changes.

2. To ensure your ostomy supplies fit well, measure your stoma frequently. It's a good idea to do this at every change or at least once a month.

3. Avoid buying large quantities of supplies right away. Your stoma's shape and size may continue to change during the first few months after surgery, so it's best to wait until things stabilize.

4. If your stoma is round, it might be easier to use pre-cut barriers, unless you are irrigating.

5. Here's a practical tip for cutting your wafer: Keep the plastic backing from your previous wafer to use as a template for the next one. If you're using a 2-piece system, place the newly cut wafer over the stoma first to ensure there's about a ¼-inch clearance all around before applying it.
