Not Always Okay

This topic is about coping with the emotional ups and downs after having a colostomy. The person who started the discussion had their surgery on April 1, 2016, as a necessary step after complications from radiation treatment for anal cancer. The colostomy significantly improved their life, allowing them to grow professionally and avoid the need for diapers. However, they still have days when they feel "broken" despite being grateful for the positive changes.

Here are some helpful insights and advice for anyone in a similar situation:

1. It's completely normal to have tough days. Allow yourself to feel these emotions instead of pushing them away.
2. Remember that your ostomy is just a small part of who you are. Focus on enjoying life and recognize that it is a better alternative to dealing with incontinence.
3. Appreciate the practical benefits, like the freedom to travel without worrying about finding clean public restrooms.
4. Know that many others with ostomies experience similar emotional highs and lows. You're not alone, so hang in there and take care of yourself.
5. Being open about your struggles shows strength and courage. Remind yourself that you made the right decision for your health.
