Finding a Masseuse for Back Massage with a Stoma

This topic is about finding a comfortable way to enjoy a back massage when you have an abdominal stoma. The challenge is to avoid putting pressure on the stoma or pouch, which can be uncomfortable or even painful. Here are some helpful tips and insights for navigating this situation:

1. Communicate your needs clearly to your massage therapist. Let them know if you need to stay face-up for the entire session or if you need to change positions more frequently. Most therapists are willing to adjust their routines to accommodate your needs.

2. Timing can be important. Some people with a stoma find they can lie on their stomach for a short period when the stoma is less active. Be ready to switch positions as soon as you start feeling any discomfort.

3. Consider alternative positions for your massage:
- Try a fully seated or forward-leaning chair massage, similar to those offered in malls.
- Explore standing, supported-sitting, or entirely supine (lying on your back) sessions.
- Side-lying massages can also be an option, where you lie on one side and then switch to the other.

4. Use cushions and supports to relieve pressure on the stoma:
- A U-shaped neck pillow can be placed under your abdomen.
- Inflatable donut cushions or any soft pillow can help off-load pressure from the pouch.
- A pregnancy foam support with a belly cut-out can work well for accommodating an ostomy pouch.

5. If a therapist is unable or unwilling to adapt to your needs, keep looking. It's important to find a practitioner who prioritizes your comfort and relaxation.
