Re-designing irrigation sleeves

This topic is about finding a solution for a new colostomate who wants to use irrigation to reduce the need for frequent pouch changes or emptying. The challenge is that the adhesive on the supplied irrigation sleeve caused significant skin irritation, even when using barrier spray and cream. Here's a creative approach and some helpful advice:

1. A reusable irrigation sleeve was invented by:
- Cutting the rim from a Coloplast ‘Click’ closed pouch 13305.
- Turning a Dansac irrigation sleeve 950-35 inside-out so that its adhesive faces the pouch instead of the skin.
- Attaching the Click pouch to the sleeve. A standard non-click pouch was also tried, but those are single-use.

2. Benefits of this custom-made device include:
- No adhesive from the sleeve touches the skin, and the baseplate remains in place, avoiding extra changes.
- It allows for a quick switch from the sleeve to the pouch after irrigation.
- The sleeve can be washed and reused.
- The intact back panel of the pouch acts as an internal splash-guard, with the pouch opening cut more than halfway around for cone access.
- The sleeve can be tapered below the pouch using Sellotape to speed up waste wash-down.

3. The prototype and suggestion were sent to Coloplast in hopes of commercial development. A separate prototype was also made to manage excess mucus from the anal stump.

4. After failing to obtain alternative sleeves from Coloplast UK and Charter Healthcare, the originator requested product codes for other sleeves. They learned that the Coloplast Assura irrigation sleeve 12836 is not marketed in the UK and may not fit the local Click system. They are considering asking family in New Zealand to send a Hollister irrigation system seen on a YouTube demonstration.

5. It's noted that not everyone has the time, skills, or inclination to build homemade sleeves, and there is a hope that manufacturers will address this need.

6. Several users recommend the Coloplast Assura irrigation sleeve, product #12836:
- It clicks directly onto the Assura/Coloplast barrier or onto a faceplate held by a belt.
- After irrigation, the user can simply snap the regular pouch back on.
- These sleeves are durable if washed after each use, which extends their life and reduces cost.

7. A reminder that product availability varies by country; what is sold in one market, like the USA, may not be available in another, such as the UK.
