Soreness in My Stoma

This topic is about experiencing soreness of the stoma after switching to a different ostomy bag. The person sharing their experience had to change their pouching system due to thick output and is now wondering if others have felt similar soreness.

Here are some helpful insights and advice shared by others:

1. Deodorants & Additives:
- One person found that using lubricating deodorants like Adapt and Brava, along with dissolving Tic Tac mints inside the pouch, caused an "itch-type" soreness. They stopped using these products, and the discomfort went away.
- Another person asked about the specific deodorants used, and it was confirmed to be Adapt and Brava. This person also stopped using deodorants after making dietary changes that reduced odor.

2. Output Management:
- If you have thick output, you might not need to change your entire appliance. To make it easier to empty, try adding water to the pouch. A routine of two rinses with about 150 ml each was suggested.
- Some worry that flushing the pouch with water might reduce the wear-time of the appliance, but one user reported that it did not affect their wear-time, which remained at an average of 7–8 days per change.

3. Professional Support & Routine Building (Kansas City area):
- It's a good idea to consult an enterostomal therapist (ET) to evaluate your stoma and help you create a personal care routine.
- Home-visit ET services are available through Visiting Nurses and St. Luke’s Home Health.
- Outpatient stoma clinics are available at Menorah, KU, University Health (highly recommended), and other facilities in the Northland.
- Using a written checklist can be helpful to ensure you don't forget any steps or supplies during changes.
