To Strip or Not - Are Hydrocolloid Strips Necessary?

This topic is about considering whether to stop using hydrocolloid "C-shaped" security strips around the edge of an ostomy wafer. The person sharing their experience has always used these strips since getting an ileostomy but noticed that the wafer still felt secure even after removing the strips. They are seeking advice on whether it's safe to stop using them altogether. Here are some insights and tips from others who have been in similar situations:

- Many people with long-term ileostomies have never used hydrocolloid strips and have managed well. They recommend:
1. Ensuring the skin around the stoma is clean and dry before applying the wafer.
2. Warming the wafer with your hands or body heat before application.
3. Trimming or shaving hair around the stoma area, especially for men.
4. Using a thin barrier ring with a pre-cut convex wafer if needed to improve the seal.

- The strips are mainly an optional extra layer to prevent the wafer's edges from lifting during activities like swimming, heavy sweating, sports, or long flights. If you don't experience leaks and aren't in these situations, many suggest trying to go without them, as less can sometimes be more.

- For some, the strips provide extra confidence. One person mentioned using them daily due to past issues with leaks, finding the cost and effort worth it for peace of mind.

- Alternatives to using strips include:
1. A Hollister Ostomy Belt, which helps keep a detached pouch from falling.
2. Choosing wafers or pouches with wider built-in outer tape for a stronger hold.

- A typical routine for changing without strips might look like this:
1. Removal: Use adhesive-remover wipes or spray, clean with toilet paper, rinse with a water bottle, and take a hot shower.
2. Placement: Apply a barrier wipe, then a barrier ring, and finally the new appliance without strips.

- The general consensus is that if you aren't experiencing leaks or skin issues, it's worth experimenting with not using the strips. You can always reintroduce them for specific activities or if leaks start to occur.
