Is It Normal for Stoma Size to Change After Colostomy?

Let's talk about stoma size and shape changes after a colostomy. If you've noticed your stoma looking a bit different, like becoming more "poofy" or protruded, you might be wondering if this is normal. Here's some helpful information and advice from others who have experienced similar changes:

- It's quite common for stomas to change in size and shape. People have described their stomas as looking anything from "mushroom-like" to "prune-like." They can swell unexpectedly, sometimes growing from the size of a ping-pong ball to a peach, and then return to their usual size. The angle of the stoma can also change over time, such as going from straight to having a 90-degree bend. Additionally, stomas often shrink gradually in the months following surgery, with examples like going from 30 mm to 19 mm or from 29 mm to 28 mm. These changes can happen daily or even moment-to-moment and are normal for both ileostomies and colostomies.

- After surgery, as the body heals, the stoma typically becomes slightly smaller. However, fluctuations in size can continue to occur even years later.

- When it comes to fitting your appliance, here are some tips:
1. Re-measure your stoma before each wafer change instead of relying on an old measurement.
2. Cut the wafer to match the current size of your stoma and always double-check the fit.
3. Avoid cutting the opening too tight; leave a little room to accommodate any swelling.
4. If pre-cut sizes don't fit well, consider cutting wafers freehand to the exact size you need rather than pre-cutting a whole box.

- It's understandable to feel concerned if your stoma suddenly enlarges, but remember that these changes are usually harmless and temporary. As some say, "stomas have a mind of their own.
