Hernia Belt Irritation and Slippage Issues

This topic is about dealing with the challenges of wearing a hernia support belt when you have a stoma. The belt is great for providing abdominal support, but it can sometimes cause irritation around the stoma and slip down while you're moving around. Here are some helpful tips and insights from others who have faced similar issues:

1. Consider ordering a custom-made hernia belt. These are designed to fit your exact measurements and come with a pre-cut opening for the stoma, which can help reduce pressure and irritation. They are available in places like Montreal, Canada, and cost around CA $300.

2. Try adjusting the size of the wafer hole. Cutting it larger than usual can help reduce irritation. You can also use a Brava moldable barrier ring around the stoma where it meets the skin. Place the wafer over this ring to transfer the belt's pressure to the skin, slightly away from the stoma.

3. Use a Nu-Hope hernia support belt, which comes in 3-inch or 4-inch widths. Many users have found these belts comfortable for all-day wear, cycling, or long walks, especially if you have a colostomy with thicker output.

4. Experiment with different belt widths or a looser fit to see if it reduces direct pressure on the stoma.

5. Consult with an ostomy nurse. They can assess whether your belt and appliance are fitted correctly and help protect the skin around your stoma. You can ask your urologist for a referral to an ostomy nurse.

6. If you're looking for more budget-friendly options, check online marketplaces like eBay for low-cost hernia or ostomy belts.
