Living with an Enlarged Stoma: Meet "SKIPPY

This topic is about living with a stoma that is getting longer and might be prolapsing, humorously nicknamed "Skippy." While the situation is described with a touch of humor, there is genuine concern about the stoma's increasing size and what steps might be necessary to address it.

Here are some helpful insights and advice:

1. Consider the possibility of a stomal prolapse:
- Check if the stoma extends outward and then retracts when you lie down and gently press it. This is known as being reducible.
- Prolapse is more common with loop ostomies but can also happen with end ostomies.

2. Monitoring and medical review:
- A mild prolapse of a couple of inches is usually not urgent, but it's important to inform your surgeon.
- If the prolapse extends to 4–5 inches or more, surgical revision is often recommended.

3. Support garments:
- A prolapse belt can help keep the stoma in place and prevent further protrusion.
- Nu-Hope makes prolapse belts, which are similar to hernia belts and have a small Velcro tab for the stoma opening. Other suppliers may offer similar products.

4. Surgical timing considerations:
- Some surgeons may delay corrective surgery if the patient is physically weak or under-nourished, suggesting a period of watchful waiting until the overall condition improves.

5. Practical tip: Keep the elongated stoma protected and avoid activities, such as heavy straining or letting it "dangle over the side for the fishes," that might worsen the prolapse.
