Is it Normal to Have Feces from the Rectum with an Ileostomy?

This topic is about the experience of passing stool through the rectum after having an ileostomy, which can be surprising and concerning for those who have undergone this surgery. An ileostomy is a procedure where the small intestine is diverted through an opening in the abdomen, and typically, nothing should pass through the rectum afterward. However, some people may still experience this, and here are some insights and advice on the matter:

1. If you notice something passing through the rectum, it might not be stool but rather thickened mucus. This is common when the rectum is left in place and can range in color from clear to brown, sometimes resembling feces.

2. Passing mucus is generally normal and harmless, even if it happens years after the surgery. It can be messy but is usually not a cause for concern.

3. If you experience what seems to be true fecal material, especially if it involves explosive diarrhea or severe constipation, it is important to contact your colorectal surgeon or stoma nurse. They can provide guidance and reassurance.

4. Since local ostomy nurses may not be available, discussing these occurrences with your primary-care physician is a good step. They can help determine if further evaluation is needed.

5. During medical procedures like colonoscopy prep, retained stool might require interventions such as enemas to clear, which can sometimes lead to unexpected rectal discharge.

6. Always seek professional advice if you are unsure or worried about any symptoms you experience after an ileostomy. Your healthcare team is there to help you navigate these situations.
