DIY Alternatives to Stomaplex's Sealing Gadget

This topic is about finding do-it-yourself alternatives to a product called the "Equalizer" by Stomaplex. The Equalizer is a soft-plastic ring designed to fit over a stoma and apply even pressure to help prevent leaks, especially for those with ileostomies. The original poster feels that the $25 price tag is too high and is looking for more affordable options that can be made from everyday items. Here are some suggestions and insights shared by the community:

1. Consider using a shot glass. A shot glass with a diameter of 1 ¾ inches (44 mm) might work for larger stomas, but the original poster needs one with a 1 ½ inch (38 mm) outer diameter. The thick glass provides firm, even pressure, and the clear material allows you to see if any output escapes.

2. Try an empty pill bottle. Find one with a mouth that fits snugly around the stoma. You might ask a pharmacist for different-sized empty bottles to test.

3. Use an old 35 mm black film canister. This canister can serve a similar purpose if it fits well around the stoma.

4. Explore plumbing supplies. A short section of ABS or PVC pipe or fitting can be cut to the right diameter. You can browse the pipe-fitting aisle with calipers to find the right size. Both ABS and PVC are safe for brief skin contact, with the main differences being color (ABS is usually black, PVC is white) and slight differences in rigidity.

5. Consider using a larger wafer size than what manufacturers recommend. Some users find that a larger wafer seals just as well and may make pressing easier.
