Concerns about mucus after RV fistula surgery

This topic is about a person who developed a rectovaginal fistula after a hemorrhoid surgery led to an abscess. After several unsuccessful repair attempts, she underwent a significant surgery called a gracilis muscle-flap inversion in July 2015. Post-surgery examinations show the fistula is closed, and she is waiting for her perineal wound to heal before having her ileostomy reversed. However, she experiences intermittent mucus discharge from the rectum, accompanied by feelings of weakness, nausea, and light-headedness. Some mucus also appears in the vagina, along with occasional small air bubbles. Her surgeon does not think the fistula has returned and is unsure about the mucus source. She is looking for confirmation from others who might have experienced similar symptoms before proceeding with the reversal.

Here are some pieces of advice and insights shared by others:

1. General encouragement: Many people wish her well and suggest she continues to seek clarification before going ahead with the reversal.

2. Re-post strategy: It might be helpful to use a more specific subject line like “RV Fistula” to attract responses from women who have had similar experiences.

3. Medical considerations:
- Some surgeons consider rectal mucus discharge after an ileostomy to be normal, with the frequency varying from none to quite often.
- Vaginal mucus, especially after menopause, is less common. It might be worth investigating further to rule out any small leakage or new tract between the rectum and vaginal wall.
