Seeking Shorter Ostomy Bag Options

This topic is about finding a shorter ostomy bag for nighttime drainage that fits comfortably and functions well. The current setup is causing some issues, and the couple is looking for alternatives. Here are some suggestions and insights that might help:

1. Reach out to Hollister's customer support. You can search for "Hollister ostomy" online to find their contact information. Ask them for samples of any shorter pouches or systems they offer. Trying out samples is often the quickest way to find a size that works well.

2. If you want to keep using the Hollister 18403 pouch, you can try shortening it yourself. Fold the bottom of the pouch and secure it with a rubber band. This can help reduce the length without affecting its capacity or drainage function. Wearing the pouch outside of low-rise briefs can also help avoid pressure and creasing.

3. There are shorter pouches available, but they tend to fill up quickly. This might mean more frequent emptying, which can disturb sleep, and they might also lead to filter clogging and ballooning. An alternative approach is to keep the longer pouch and position it diagonally across the abdomen. For example, if the stoma is on the right, angle the pouch toward the left hip. This can help maintain capacity, reduce the need for nighttime emptying, and keep the bottom of the pouch higher on the thigh.
