Recovery time for Rectal Removal Surgery (Barbie Butt)?

This topic is about understanding the recovery process and post-operative care after having rectal removal surgery, often referred to as "Barbie Butt" surgery. This procedure is considered by some who have a colostomy and are experiencing issues with their retained rectum. Here are some insights and advice shared by others who have gone through this surgery:

1. Healing timeline:
- The wound at the perineal area (the rear) can take longer to heal than the abdominal incision, sometimes taking twice as long to close completely.
- One person mentioned they could sit, albeit with some discomfort, about a month after surgery. Their doctors estimated another 4 to 6 weeks for full healing.

2. Managing the incision and wound care:
- Thick post-operative pads might press on the wound and cause more pain. Switching to thinner pads can help with comfort.
- A device known as a "wound vac," prescribed by a doctor, was noted to help speed up the healing process from the inside out for an open perineal wound.

3. Identifying concerning symptoms:
- It's common to have clear, non-smelly mucus discharge from a disconnected rectum. However, if the mucus is discolored (green, red, orange) or if there is obvious blood, it is considered abnormal and should be checked by a doctor.

4. Overall outlook:
- Many who have had both their colon and rectum removed due to conditions like Crohn’s, cancer, or chronic colitis report a significantly improved quality of life. This is despite the initial adjustment period and the need for ongoing care to ensure proper wound healing and to prevent hernias.
