Rash Around Ostomy Bag Site - Treatment Tips?

The topic at hand is about dealing with a rash that has developed around the site of an ostomy bag. This can be quite uncomfortable, and finding a solution that soothes the skin without affecting the adhesion of the ostomy appliance is important. Here are some helpful tips and advice for managing this issue:

1. Use moisturizing barrier creams that do not interfere with the adhesion of the wafer:
- Consider using Coloplast Sween Cream, but make sure it is the version that is labeled as not affecting tape adhesion.
- Another option is 3M Cavilon Barrier Cream, which is known to calm irritation and keep the skin soft.

2. If the rash is under the tape border and is due to adhesive sensitivity or a yeast infection:
- Switch to wafers that do not have a tape border to avoid irritation.
- Use DuoDerm as an outer securing strip. It has a milder adhesive that can hold for about six days.
- For yeast infections, an over-the-counter oral antifungal like Canesten/Canastan can be effective.

3. If the rash is caused by acid output leading to sores near the stoma:
- Try using a mouldable wafer to achieve a snug fit, which can help reduce leakage onto the skin.
- For persistent and painful sores, silver-nitrate sticks can be used to cauterize the spots. Although there might be brief discomfort, relief usually follows quickly.

4. A general tip is to identify the exact cause of the rash, whether it is due to dryness, an adhesive allergy, a fungal infection, or leakage. This will help in choosing the most effective remedy while ensuring the pouch remains securely attached.
