Is the Eaken Seal necessary for a good seal?

The topic at hand is about whether using an Eakin Seal is necessary for a reliable ostomy seal. The person who started the discussion currently uses an Eakin Seal along with a ConvaTec moldable wafer. However, a nurse from ConvaTec suggested that this extra step might not be needed and could be adding unnecessary cost. The person is concerned about the possibility of reduced wear time or leaks if they stop using the seal and is seeking advice from others who have experience with this.

Here are some insights and advice shared by the community:

- Many people emphasize that stoma care is a personal experience. If using the extra ring makes you feel more secure, it's okay to continue using it, even if a nurse suggests otherwise.

- Some individuals have stopped using the Eakin Seal and have not experienced any issues. For example, one person uses only a Coloplast barrier wipe and applies a Sensura Mio one-piece drainable pouch directly to the skin. In hot weather or during high activity, they add 3M 2-inch cloth tape around the edges for extra hold. This approach saves money on accessories, allowing for daily pouch changes within insurance limits.

- If you choose not to use a seal, there are other ways to reinforce the pouch. Options include using Coloplast "Y-strips" around the flange or the 3M cloth tape mentioned earlier.

- For those who experience occasional skin irritation from leaks, applying Anascept wound gel after showering and wiping it off before placing the pouch can help.

- Some people still prefer using a ring because it provides them with confidence and longer wear time. One user reported achieving a 7-day wear time and healthy skin around the stoma by using a moldable barrier ring, even when cutting the wafer hole by hand.

- The added cost and step of using a ring are worth it for some, as it allows them to live life more comfortably and with peace of mind.

- A few members have taken a DIY approach, creating their own accessories. They believe that since one-size-fits-all products don't work for everyone, experimenting to find what suits you best is important.
