How I Manage My Parastomal Hernia at Home

This topic is about a manual technique for reducing a parastomal hernia at home. A parastomal hernia is a type of hernia that occurs around a stoma, which is an opening created during surgery for waste to leave the body. The person sharing this method has received approval from their surgeon to use it. Here’s how you can try this technique:

1. Lie down on your back and make sure you are completely relaxed.
2. Use your hand to find the bulge around the stoma.
3. With the flat of your palm, gently massage the area in a circular motion. Continue this until the hernia moves back through the muscle wall.
4. You might feel a brief moment of discomfort or pain when the hernia slides back, but this should be followed by immediate relief.
5. This palm-only technique can also be applied to other types of hernias you can feel, like incisional hernias.

Some important warnings to keep in mind:

- Do not use your fingertips or knuckles, as this can pinch the bowel or make the defect larger.
- Be gentle to avoid causing any injury.
