I am a 47 year old male from the southern US. I have fought and suffered with diverticulitis for five years. My GI doctor had told me my colon was damaged and that surgery would help with my pain. I was reluctant to take his advice, but had actually began a search for a surgeon that I felt I would be comfortable with. Had my last colonoscopy done on 12/30/10. On 2/11/11 my colon perforated. I assumed it was another attack of diverticulitis, but the cramping and pain didnt subside as it had the other times. On 2/13/11 went to the hospital because of insistance of family. Four hours later I was lying on a bed talking to a surgeon that was chosen for me.
Needless to say I was a bit confused and extremely scared.
He removed all the descending and sigmoid colon and I have a tranverse stoma. Fortunatly I have been healing well and have got better at dealing with my pouch. I will get scoped again on 5/3/11 by a different GI doctor and if all is healed the surgeon will schedule a reversal for sometime in the middle of may.
Thats my story and I'm sticking to it.
