Disposable bags and visiting

Posted by margie, on Sun Aug 29, 2010 3:12 am
I had my operation two months ago and haven't gone anywhere overnight yet. I have a two part system and throw everything in the bin. Can any tell me, who has the two part disposable bag system, what they do when visiting people who aren't aware that they have a colostomy bag about the rubbish they create?
thanks
Margie

Hi Margie,

I have travelled in the year since my colostomy and also use a 2 part system.  Stayed at hotels and with family.  I travel with the same plastic disposable bags that I use at home.  Hotels are easy since they empty the garbage daily.  I change and put everything in the plastic bag, knot well and put in the garbage.  With family I find out where they put their garbage out and try myself to directly take out my double bagged garbage.  Sometimes they argue and so let them carry out the bag.  With double bagging there is no smell or indication of what is in there.

Also, like others on this site I recommend carrying more supplies then you need at home.  Seem to go through them faster when traveling.

     Good luck!

Hi Margie,

I have used a two-part ostomy system for fifteen years, and it has not stopped me from traveling as far away as Egypt.  I have gotten into a routine of saving ZipLoc plastic storage bags.  I rinse and save them, and use them for disposal of my used appliance.  Like Lynn, I then double bag the first in an opaque bag and knot it tightly.  Voila! There is no odor, and nobody can see the contents.  If I am staying at a friend's home, I try to find the outside trash can.  Good luck!

Hey Margie,

Agree totally with the suggestions here.

When I travel I just use the same system as when I'm home, I use what we call in Oz "nappy sacks" (could be diaper bags elsewhere), and definitely no smell with these.  I also use the regular disposal bags you get with the Hollister products.

I guess we ostomates seem to think we create more rubbish/odour issues than others but I honestly don't think we do.

Happy travels,
Jo x

I'm not as thrifty as Katy.  I buy Ziploc bags enmasse so as to never run out.  Double bag when needed and travel all over the country with no issues.  And, yes, always try to find and use the outside garbage.    Loren

I just went on a 7 day cruise into Alaska and had no problems. I also double-bag ; I use 1-piece system, always find the outside garbage when over at friends houses. I use the odor eliminator called NA'SCENT and it leaves NO odor to worry about. WAAAY better than the ADAPT I was using. It actually kills the bacteria and has no scent of its own.

Hi Margie,

I have the two part and love it.  So convenient!!!!! What I do when I have to take care of business away from home is do what has to be done and just take the bag out to the outside trash can.  Since it is in a brown disposable plastic bag I tuck it in a pocket or my waistband and just go outside for "a breath of fresh air" and find the outside trash can and shove it down into that.....

Margie,
What is a 2 ply, I have only one bag. when I travel or go shopping, I just empty the bag  like you would go to the bathroom.

Hi Margie

I don't know if we can get Na Scent in Australia, but I use Nodor as a deodorant in my appliance, and you can get  it from your Ostomy Association.   It's a liquid deodorant that you can put in your pouch when you change or empty it.  You are allowed 2 bottles per month, but try one first before ordering a second one.  There are other deodorants  also available through your Ostomy Assoc.

Whenever I go shopping I check the bags (grocery) for holes and fold them up in small squares and stash them in the bathroom, I always have quite a stock of them so double bagging is the rule and tie them in a good knot, odorless, from my vantage point and in my kit in the car I always carry about three times necessary and its worth it 'cause it eases my mind and less to worry about. BTW, I have tried the baking soda and am really impressed with the results, I let my nose do the talking, Ed

Hi Margie
I use a 2 part bag also. I use Coloplast pouches and they come with a supply of blue opaque bags in every box of pouches. When traveling, I do the same thing that I do at home. I throw mypouch and barrier and any other clean-up items in the bag and tie a knot in it. I then fold the bag inside out and tie another knot. This way I have a double bag and it never smells which means that I can throw it in any waste can.

I don't know if you can get Coloplast products where you are.

Best of luck,

Dick
