Sex and diverticulitis and an ostomy bag

Posted by audreye, on Wed Jan 18, 2012 10:15 pm
WARNING...THIS IS AN INTIMATE QUESTION AND I AM ONLY INTERESTED IN A SERIOUS ANSWER..Ok, this is kinda hard to talk about but im just going to come right out and ask... does anyone know if having anal sex could lead to diverticulitis.  My husband enjoys having it done to him on occasion (fisting to be exact) and now he has diverticulitis..so much so that he had to have surgery and now has an ostomy bag on his abdomen. Im not trying to be funny or to gross anyone out...this is a genuine question that i cant bring myself to ask his doctor.

Hi audreye ~ I do not know the answer to your question concerning the relationship between trauma and diverculitis, but I have heard that even routine colonoscopies can lead to bowel perforations (one source mentioned odds of 1 perforation for every 1,700 colonoscopies, and up to 1 perforation for every 700 when additional factors are present such as removal of polyps).

Here's a link to some research concerning this subject:
