Colostomy Question

Hello all,

Had a question bothering my family and I thought I would bring it up here to see if I get some feedback.
My mom did her colostomy 2 years back and she is doing okay. Coping with her new lifestyle. She is a strong lady, a fighter. We love her! During one of her reviews, her doctor wanted to do a colonoscopy but they found out that part of her colon was twisted and they failed to do the test. Does it happen post-surgery? Is this normal? Is anyone here facing the same situation like this? Please let us know! Thank you in advance.

For what it's worth, Pea, I have heard that doctors can't proceed with a colonoscopy if a twisted colon or other obstruction blocks a full exam. In that event, however, they will employ some other technique such as a barium enema to accomplish the job. I am sure your mother's doctors discussed this "plan B" with your mom. The important thing here is that they get the proper information to treat your mother appropriately...not how they get it. Don't worry, be happy if they do.

Hello peacenlove.  A twisted bowel can occur for a number of different reasons both pre or post surgery. Either way it should be taken seriously and treated if necessary. For a very brief overview the following site seems useful:- http://www.buzzle.com/articles/twisted-bowel-symptoms-and-causes-of-twisted-bowel-syndrome.html   Best wishes Bill
