Hernia surgery for immunosuppressed people

Posted: Wed Feb 14, 2018 5:34 pm

Hi there. This is my first post.

I am an immunosuppressed person having had a liver transplant 14 years ago and have a parastomal hernia that I am considering having surgery for.

My question is: Are there any immunosuppressed people out there who have had parastomal hernia surgery? My potential surgeon advises that there are many risks for me ant that I can expect a long and difficult recovery.

Any advice/thoughts would be most welcome.

Have a Great Day.

Hello uaqim. This is a very pertinent question, with the added complication of immunosuppression, which I have not come across before.  I  am pleased to see that you had some response to your question on the other post  and I hope you get even more now the subject is posted in its own right. I have a parastomal hernia myself but without the added complications that you have. What I found most useful was to browse through the many past posts and replies on the subject of hernias. These can be found in the box on the left of your screen   'CONTENT'- PREMIUM CONTENT - HERNIA AND OSTOMY.

I hope you find them as helpful as I did.

Best wishes

Hello uaqim.  I see on another post that you are innterested in  making yourself a hernia belt. I have made a number of these over the years and I still prefer my own to those manufactured edxpensively by others. Fortunately, I don't wear a bag so I don't need to make holes in the belt to acommodate them. However, I feel sure that would not be a problem if the need arose. some of the best of my belts I bought as a back-brace and adapted them. these are often sold in sports shops for people like weight-lifters- so that they don't get hernias! The one (of two) that I use most is a safety belt for a wheelchair. and my second most favourite is one that was meant for carrying tools. I got both these very cheaply at  a local supermarket when they were on special offer. Most of the belts I have used are neoprene or something like it so if I wanted to mak e suitable hole in it, I would use a hot soldering iron so that the edges sealed over as I was doing the cuttting. Alternatively, I have recently found that cutting with scissors and going round the edges with a gas lighter is equally as effective for making a smooth seal.

I hope this information is useful to you

Best wishes

Hi Bill,

Thanks for the suggestions re making my own parastomal hernia support belt.

I have ordered two belts from http://www.celebrationostomysupportbelt.com/ to start with.

I may well add to these with one of your suggestions.

Many thanks

Steve
