Why do they not just cut it out of your belly button instead of making a jog around it? It does not do anything except collect lint.

Another very good observation xnine and I've sometimes wondered the same thing. There surely must be a reasonable physiological explanation. Perhaps someone can elighten us!

I do not know, but I have heard someone say it is to avoid a possible later belly button hernia. But I do not know if this is correct.

I lost my belly button when I got my colostomy. Later, when my reconnection, I did develop a hernia in that region. My surgeon refuses to repair it just because I died during the reconnection surgery. He is now afraid to operate on me.
