Kittens Update - Week 8 - All Gone!

Final update on the cuties...........they've all found good homes!  Momma cat looks a little sad, but she'll be fine.  Will work on catching her tomorrow and getting her spayed.  Although it was kind of cool to have kittens.......and I know I can get them homes in one day........might be cool to do it again!  I only listed those guys on our local online want-ad thing..........never even had to try Facebook Marketplace or LetGo.  They were even fighting over the orange guy and I had backups in the even someone didn't want one of them!  Seems a bit sad that the shelters are all full of cats, yet everyone wants a kitten..........so the adults end up getting euthanized after a week or so.  Pains me to even think about it.  Anyway............all's good on the kitten front!

regards,

bob

Ahhhh - and I was so looking forward to the string wiggling at the border. Spayed is a good idea. Your charges have left the nest; next, separation anxiety:)K

BOB,

There are thousand euthanized every week. Kittens included! One cat can produce through offspring 100,000 cats if none ever got spayed or neutered.
I love Kittens and puppies but they grow up! I still love them but not everyone does! I have three, all adopted as adults.  Hope all your litter's new Mommies and Daddy's get them all altered too! You were a good Daddy! Your cat is lucky to have you and is probably glad to have the barn all to herself as well!
Sorry, but I am just a little passionate about this after doing pet rescue for 25+ years!

Hi Pup,

Thanks.  Yeah, I know about the euthanizations.  I've gotten all my dogs (2 dobies and 2 pits) from rescues.  I think folks involved in animal rescue are top notch.  I did explain to each new kitten owner that they needed to see the vet ASAP, and when the time is right they need to be fixed.  Everyone agreed, but although I spent some time talking to each one............they could really say anything.  My gut told me they were good folks, or I wouldn't have let them have a kitten.........let's hope I was right.  The way some people treat animals sickens me to no end.  I try not to think about it too much, but I'd love to get my hands on some of those characters.....for just 5 minutes.

Now since you've been involved with animal rescue all those years........tell me something.  If the rescues wanted to find homes for all their dogs and cats......why don't they just run commercials on TV showing the piles of cute dead animals euthanized each week?  That would send folks flocking to the shelters to save them, but most folks don't know.......or aren't reminded enough........what happens to shelter pets if no one adopts them in a set period of time.  They have commercials showing dogs chained outside in the snow, and skinny emaciated dogs shivering.......and they even say they can't save every one.  So why not just show the pile of bodies freshly killed and tagged for disposal.  Actually, they should first show the animals alive.....the commercial should say "Here's fido on Monday".......and then show the dead dog and say........And here's Fido the following Monday because no one adopted him".  I'm sure that would help with adoptions.............so why doesn't anyone do it?  Is it illegal to show dead animals on TV or something????

bob

Hello Bob.

That sounds like a great idea (in principle) to shock people by showing them dead bodies. Unfortunately, the public respond in different ways to these types of adverts. Some are stung by them in the way that you envisage, but others are disgusted at the thought that these shelters are putting the animals down in the numbers that they do and this motivates them to stop donating to the charities. As a result, many of the charities advertise that they do not put 'any' animals down, unless they are terminally ill. Personally, I am very skeptical about this sort of claim, as the problem is far too big for them to be finding homes for all the abandoned and lost animals that come their way.

My wife worked for the RSPCA in Birmingham for a couple of years and at times they were euthanasing over a thousand animals per week from that area alone. What a terrible reflection on our 'throw-away' society!

Best wishes

Bill

Good for you for taking such good care of them, and finding caring homes for them. Let's hope they take your advice and get them neutered. Any dogs or cats we have owned have always come from a shelter, and it is gut wrenching to see the numbers of animals there. Bill is right - our throw away society is shameful.

Hey Pad...........this is interesting.  So right after the last kitten left I started calling around to schedule Momma cat's spay.  Every vet I called is jammed up with postponed appointments due to Corona........so the earliest I could get her spayed would have been in August sometime!  She's out there every night now moaning away trying to find a boyfriend......so she'd be pregnant sure as shit by August!  So I called the gal at the Rescue that I got my pooch from.  She's super cool and always offering to help me with anything pet related......so I called and told her what I found out about getting Momma spayed.  She called around and got me an appointment for this coming Monday.  So all is good.........but if anyone needs vet work.....you better schedule it NOW!

The other kicker is the price of a spay.  Having never had to pay for one before it was a bit of a shock to me.  Not the price so much, but the variability of price between vets.  The vet I'm using is a friend of mine and I'm getting the rescue's discount, so the spay will cost me $120 and they require a rabies shot because she's feral.......so I should come out of there with a bill around $200 bucks.  But there's a Well Pet Clinic that does spays for $60 and I can use an online voucher from one of the local cat rescues to lower that to $40!  But they can't do it anytime soon.  I called another vet I use that's close to me and they wanted......get this...........almost $600 to spay a cat!! No wonder more people don't get their cats spayed!  Who the hell is going to spend $600 to spay a stray cat?  I'm ranting, aren't I?  Ok......I just thought the spread in prices for the same damn service was NUTS!

regards,

bob

Holy cow! I haven't had to get a pet neutered in a long time, so I had no idea how expensive it has become! $600? Is this the Twilight Zone? You are right - no wonder people don't get their pets neutered.

It would be cheaper to turn it in to a shelter then if you need one adopt one that has been spayed. LOL
