My stoma is swollen very big. I'm freaking out.

Any pain/stomach discomfort? If so, seek medical help. The stoma can get swollen; either cut the hole in the base bigger to fit the stoma, or you can sprinkle sugar on it. I know it sounds crazy, but it takes the swelling down, and sugar won't harm the stoma.

Hi Deb,

As you can see, the outpouring of love and support from this website will help you to find the strength to lift yourself up and out of your current emotional situation. I am lucky to have my husband by my side through all of this, so I will not even pretend to know how you feel and what you're going through alone. I do know that I have great friends on this site and in my life that have been by my side, and hopefully you have many by your side as well. You do have a lot of new friends here. Please feel free to talk through anything that is on your mind. We all go through a confidence deficit when we go through an ostomy surgery. Our body has been marred and your mind feels that way sometimes too. It is tough to move on, but you will. You will be stronger once you realize that you are still the beautiful woman you were prior to your surgery. Hopefully, you can reach out to a local support group and find some additional friends in your same situation. It always helps to have a sounding board wherever you find it!

Are you having any output? How long has it been that way? It could be a blockage. Does it look like it's just your normal stoma, only swollen, or does it look like part of your insides have come out further than normal? That would be a prolapse, in which case the sugar would work. If it's a blockage, that won't do anything. Try drinking a bottle of Coke if you can, or some other really sweet liquid, real sugar, not sugar-free. Then lie down and try to relax; use your fingers to put pressure all around your stoma. If this doesn't work after a few minutes, try walking around. If still no luck, you probably need to get to the ER. Please let us know how things go, and good luck.

I read to just lie down on your back, and I did, and it went back to normal. Thank you.

Thank you… when I laid down, I went down. Yes, my output was normal. I appreciate your response and advice.
