ABRAHAM LINCOLN HAD SETTLED INTO HIS CHAIR when the lady brought him his hot drink. With an anticipation to which any of us could relate, he lifted the cup to his lips and sipped. Then he called her back, doing his best to keep a straight face. “If this is coffee,” Lincoln said, “please bring me some tea.” Then he added: “If this is tea, please bring me some coffee.” The fact that he couldn’t tell is all that we need to know about what was contained in his cup. We all have preferences, and taste preferences are right at the top of our everyday list. Coke or Pepsi? Hunts or Heinz? Jiff or Skippy? Ford or Chevy? Then there are the biggies: Democrat or Republican? City or country? North or South? Heterosexual or… I don’t know, I’ve lost count of all the other possibilities. Are human beings pickier about their choices than other animals? Would a lion prefer chowing down on a wildebeest or a zebra? Would a blue jay rather build its nest in a camelia bush than a hickory tree? These are ponderous questions, not to be taken lightly. We ought to be thankful that we have so many choices, I suppose. One can have one’s martini shaken, not stirred, like James Bond. As for me… I’ve never had a martini.
