If I was a relative newbie with an ostomy, I have no doubt that this site would be very helpful to me.  The members are quick to respond to questions and issues and they are filled with experience.  When I joined, I already had a lifetime with an ostomy, so I just regard it as a place to meet and communicate with other folks similarly situated.  Either way, it is a good site.

Hi Sharon and Super Hero:
I have had a urostomy with the barrier-and-bag deal for 6 years. Have been diving for years. Was a bit apprehensive diving after surgery (not because of the sharks:-) ) but it has worked out well. Usually I get 4 - 5 days with a barrier and bag, but the prolonged exposure to water cuts this to a couple of days... no big deal. I just bring lots of supplies.

As for how it affects the ostomy, it doesn't. Checked with my MD who dives, and with PADI doctors. Nothing can get into the ostomy opening. Just before entering the water, I open the bag, jump in, and any urine escapes during the dive. Leaving the bag closed had led to a very full and sometimes leaking bag/barrier upon rising from any depth. So I just leave it open, then close it upon exiting the water. No one ever knows. They just think I'm "adjusting" myself.

Have tried waterproof tape around the barrier. Doesn't seem to matter one way or the other.

So, in conclusion, go for it!

Thanks for your knowledge, as for myself I have a ileosomy so it is alittle differnt,if i open it the wetsuit would et quite messy (**you understand**)!I just make sure I don't eat much afew hours before the dive which padi doesn't recommend but.......little choice, and my dives can be short at times because the oxygen goes straigt to the bowel and can fill with air overtime, but I am hooked and I love it,I am so glad I did it,wouldn't change it for the world! I think alot of ostomates don't think they can do it and I know my primary surgeon didn't think so I had to go above him and see a padi doctor,we're a small part of the padi community, that is true.
Glad I conversated with you you are the first ostomate I came accross that dives, although I have heard they're out there!
Thanks for sharing yur experiences with me.
