JANUARY.

January’s that time of year
in the northern hemisphere,
with shorter days and longer night
when winter’s wind will pack a bite.

With all festivities now done,
the gloom of winter has begun.
No warming carols to be sung
and thoughts of spring, have not yet sprung.

It is a time that we all know
will bring us rain, with sleet or snow
so, we prepare for flooding too
but there’s not much that we can do.

In January, as a rule,
the winter storms are harsh and cruel,
wreaking havoc and destruction
on things that once seemed sound construction.

It’s January when winter’s cold
tends to affect the weak and old
and hospitals will overflow
for that’s the way that they will go.

This is a time we hold our breath
and hope there is not too much death,
yet, nonetheless, the winter’s chill
predictably makes people ill.

In this first month of twenty one,
a plague’s upon us, everyone,
and as millions of people die
we cannot help but wonder why.

So, January of this year
may well go down as one of fear,
but with a vaccine now in sight
our future may be looking bright.
