Seem to be at a bit of a cross roads at the moment. The biggest thing giving me grief is a pelvic abscess that developed after my surgery, it's been 3 years now and it's still producing puss that I have to drain off on a daily basis. Luckily the abscess found a route through to my remaining rectal stump so thats where I shove a catheter to drain it off.

What I'm thinking is, is my GI specialist the best qualified person to deal with this problem or is there a better surgical speciality that could maybe offer a better resolution. Grabbing at straws a bit I know, but it's getting to the stage where I feel this dam abscess is draining the life out of me and it's time to bite the bullet and get it sorted. This, regardless of the additional risks of surgery for me.

Anyone got any ideas?

Wow Phil, that is a long time to put up with a draining abscess!

When I first got colorectal cancer in 2008 I developed an abscess too in my pelvic cavity.
They admitted me for intervention surgery. It was the most painful experience ever, but they inserted the catheter and left it in to drain. It drained for about a week, they did another scan and decided it was drained enough and they took out the catheter, I almost went through the roof it hurt so bad! Anyway, after that no more problems. There is a small pocket of fluid that shows up on scans...but no other issues.

Anyway I just want to encourage you to seek a second opinion and to keep pushing for answers on getting that cleared up. Not sure how or who would do this for you, but please please do not settle.

Cheers and good luck!
