Ostomy Memories of Withdrawal Pains

I POSTED RECENTLY ABOUT TAKING A BREAK from watching the news.  I’d become a news junkie.  The news pissed me off.  It was disturbing, upsetting, inexplicable.  So, I quit cold turkey.  It didn’t go well.  Before very long, I got jittery.  My hands didn’t shake, but I think I began blinking more often.  It was eye flutter as a symptom of feeling uninformed.  I found that I couldn’t stand not knowing what was going on.  There was no medication that I could take to relax the constricting blood vessels in my forehead when I looked at my watch and realized that it was time for my favorite news show.  When I tried to concentrate on a good book, I was having a hard time focusing.  My quitting the news was causing severe withdrawal pains.  Is there a Betty Ford Center for news junkies?  The moratorium lasted one week.  I’m back looking at the news now, employing the same profane reaction as before, cursing the fear mongering, hating the polarization, marveling at the stupidity and the hypocrisy.  America’s dysfunctional democracy on full, obscene display.  That’s news!  The eye flutter has now given way to the usual nausea.

LOL Henry. My dad used to watch the news all the time. I would get the complete update on all the world affairs when I went to visit. I never watched the news... didn't have to. LOL He enjoyed telling me what was going on, what was wrong, what should be done... I do miss those conversations. I loved hearing how he viewed the world.

I too am a news junkie..... I especially love to watch Lester Holt - not due to his political affiliation I just like his demeanor. Unfortunately, his newscast is at 6:30 p.m. just when I am either preparing dinner or about to sit down to dinner. I am currently in negotiations with my honey (hubby) to install a TV on a kitchen wall (so I can watch Lester) surrounded by a beautiful hand crafted frame thus making it look like a picture to camouflage the TV look. He usually loves these types of projects, as he is an avid woodworker, but has balked at this idea. I am not sure why - is it too much trouble or is he not liking the fact that I love Lester Holt and he doesn't want him alone in the kitchen with me?. jb

It was more about I don't pay much attention to news than anything, wasn't really about who's on camera.

Henry, it's the same Center as the one for social media withdrawal! But, seriously, I understand your predicament. I stopped reading the newspaper for the very same reasons you stated. I just couldn't take it anymore. It's a very different world today. News is biased according to who's presenting it. That's not to say that there aren't very real events taking place, but it's the interpretation of the meaning behind them. Having said all that, I will quote my mom who used to say, "Even Helen Keller could see that" for things that were so obvious. I've been thinking about my mom A LOT for the past seven years or so.

The blinking of the eyelids sounds like a vitamin deficiency. I use a 1/4 cup sunflower seed kernels DAILY! It contains vitamins and zinc, and phosphorus. A fun and healthy remedy.

HA Ha! Fellow News Junkies

I love it!
Despite the despair that tends to lead night after night, I am always reassured that Lester Holt leaves with a feel good story of people doing their best to continue to do good in their corner of this crazy wonderful world.

Hands down my go to is CNN's silver fox Anderson Cooper!!! He could read the back of a corn flakes box I'd tune in!

Yes I know, he's quite settled with his ex partner raising his two boys.

But it is fun to dream during the commercial breaks!

And then one day dreams come true!

Very interesting topic

Here in the UK the news in fact any news mediais heavily panic mongering or or agenda led to the point of

If you don't engage with news you are uninformedconversely if you do engage with the news you are misinformed

So I shun all papers and news outletsand only hear snippets unavoidably on the radio

I don't like dishonesty in any form
