Rectal Pressure Post-Ileostomy: Seeking Advice

Hello and thanks in advance for any advice.
I have had my ileostomy now for 10yrs as the result of battling UC. For the past 3 days now I have been getting really bad pressure in my rectum (feels like my insides are going to fall out).  
Sitting, standing or walking it does not ease up, I feel the need to clench my bum to stop the pressure.  When I go pee I relax my rectum and it feels like I going to loss all my insides. This is driving me nuts.
Other then the first year after my surgery, I have not had any issues and have not seen a specialist in about 8yrs.
Has anyone had this problem? Should I make an appointment to see specialist?

I've only had my ileostomy for 10 months but know that I've had mucus and mucus with blood come out of my rectum ever since the surgery. They gave me suppositories to clear up the blood but I'm still not sure why they just didn't remove the stem since they knew I could never have a reversal. I feel some pressure at times but nothing to the extent you seem to be having. I think I would call my doctor to get it checked out.

I agree - get checked out.  You could be having a prolapse of what's left of your rectum.  I have a colostomy and a small stub of my rectum and anal sphincter were left intact.  I have those pressure problems frequently and I use Anucort steroidal suppositories to reduce the inflammation and weeping from the irradiated tissue.  Sometimes it bleeds quite a bit too.  

Definitely get checked out.

Hi Truw...Artist from Seaside, Oregon here. Sorry to hear about the pressure you are experiencing. I have it too, it's been three weeks since my ilio surgery. Every time I urinate, I have to sit down and pass a couple of teaspoons of mucus(dark), and I frequently have what feels like hard bowel cramps.According to the Providence, Portland manual, the passing of the mucus is normal. To minimize the temporary pain from the cramps, my wife rubs my back down in the coxicks area vigioursly for about 5 minutes and it usually goes completely away. I just chalk them up as just part of the healing process..anyway, just wanted you to know that I am suffering right along with you..and I'm hoping that it is getting better each day!

hi there,  I have the same problem.  It drives me nuts!  I have had scopes and CT.  nothing shows to be wrong.  I just keep going back to the doctors until they detect the problem.  Just keep bugging them

Could be internal hemmorids.
I still have my little bity rectal stump and bleeding / mucus passes.  I'm told the mucus is normal as the organ still has some function.  The bleeding was found to be internal hemis at my last scoping.  And active crohn's.
Always best to get it checked out when in doubt.

It's a downer isn't it ... after thinking 'that end should be behaving now'

With me, it's active UC flares still happening in the rectal stump.

Definitely go to the doc ... after 10 years ... something 'new' like this should be thoroughly checked out.

Hi, I had that problem for about 2 years after my ileo surgery for ulcerative colitis. The bleeding, cramping and mucus was just getting me down. The consultant eventually gave up after countless different meds and removed my rectum. Its been the best decision ive ever made! I am very happy with my ileostomy and it was an easy choice whether to leave the option open to get reconnected of have it removed. Ive not had any problems since.

Hi. i have an ileostomy so no more rectum. I'm all sewed up. I get what I call phantom bowel movement pains/ cramping. It drives me nuts. Sometimes I will sit on the toilet and Pretend to poop. It usually goes away. I know- I'm wierd. But it works for me

I also suffer from this. Usually right after sex or it can happen anytime. If driving I have to pull over until its passed. The doctors have no answer other then internal scar tissue. Pain in the a$$ literally:)

I'm getting this too.

It started two weeks before a groin hernia op when I resorted to wearing a support belt, so I could work.Two days later, itching, pressure feeling sore, yet no outward signs.

Then two weeks after the op, went on a walk, the day after my rectal area which had been fine during the initail recovery went berserk, itching, pressure soreness again.

Sitting down relives it, as does sitting on the loo. Standing for a long time or walking makes me very aware of it.

Two GPs said it was fungal, which it plainly isnt. Tow other GPs said it could be the fact that as we have less guts, and more space for them,sometimes a piece of gut can rest on the scar tissue and irritate it. This feels right to me as I can sometimes feel stuff gurgling over the area.

Then the surgeon who did the hernia op, said that that wasnt possible.

Its bugging me too I can tell you.

Could it be another hernia.

All the docs have found no lumps, growths, or bulges, so maybe its a muscular or a circulatory thing.

i hate to "bring back" such an old post, but this is an issue im having out of the blue..i only had my permanent ileostomy (no rectum, only enough anus left to fold and sew closed) surgery last month (sept.6th and a second surgery due to complications sept.10th), i wasnt warned about mucus/blood etc coming out of the anus after surgery..i didnt have the issue till about 2 nights ago, i got a horrible pain in the butt (litteraly) and then came the mucus/blood..freaked my husband out more then myself, but the pain was almost unbearable

Ive just had an MRI scan for this problem I am having, only right now the pressure is all over my pelvis.

I feel downward pressure on my rectum scar pressure on the small of my back, then pressure against the recent hernia wound area.

Really sore all over this weekend, going to see a doc today see if I can get signed off until the results of the scan get analysed.

I only found out about passing mucus after sitting on the loo,feeling like i needed pooh,knowing that part no longer worked.in the end i pass a very large piece of dried mucus.I was worried as i had no idea what it was.I saved it in a bit of loo roll and in  the morning phoned my stoma nurse in a panic.She told me it was normal to pass mucus and i was lucky as some people pass it everyday and i was one of the lucky ones who didn't loose much.I get "phamtom bum" now and then,i find sitting on the loo and "trying" to pooh helps ease the pressure as it can be uncomfortable.I was told that all this is  normal as the left over stump still produces mucus,and as ive little or no rectum left, thats why i only get a bit of mucus now and then.I do wish you were told about this after you have your stoma,as it can be frightening to think your going to poop when you know your not,only to pass a nasty bit of dried mucus,I'm glad to say this as only happened one in the 3 yrs iv'e had my stoma

I also have had these pains. I had my  surgery May, 2010, I have had not mucus or blood and no feeling like I have to poop until just lately. I am going to h ave an MRI as I have 6 inches left of my colon. The reason they left that much in was the Dr. thought I could not live through a longer surgery. I find if I lay down it releaves the sensation a little. Good luck, It is so  nice to have you folks to help us newbees. Thank you.

I've had pressure/pains and discharge (mucus) from my remaining 10 inches of rectum since my surgery back in Dec. 2010 (emergency ileostomy).....talked to my surgeon about it and he suggested a Fleet enema every 3-4 days.  Since his suggestion, I have done one Fleet enema (the Fleet Natural Cleansing kind....NOT the regular saline kind for constipation) every 4-5 days.  It works wonders in cutting down on the discharge and pain/pressure.  I don't have that "urge" anymore as long as I do the Fleet every 4-5 days; no night discharge; no pain!
