Itching and Tugging After Pouch Change - Need Advice

This topic is about dealing with the discomfort of itching and a tugging sensation on the skin after changing an ostomy pouch. The person experiencing this is not in severe pain but is looking for ways to relieve the itching and prevent the pouch from pulling on the skin without using medication.

Here are some helpful tips and insights:

1. Possible reasons for itching:
- Hair follicles under the wafer might be irritated or inflamed.
- If the ostomy is new, the skin might still be adapting.
- There could be a contact allergy to the wafer or adhesive.

2. Hair management:
- Shave the area where the wafer sits to prevent hairs from being pulled, which can cause itching and discomfort.
- Use a gentle ladies’ or disposable razor and shave in multiple directions for a closer cut.
- Avoid using chemical hair removers like Nair, as they can damage the skin around the stoma.

3. Skin-protective routine:
- Check the skin around the stoma for any signs of damage each time you change the appliance.
- If itching continues or the skin appears damaged, remove the appliance, clean the area, and apply stoma powder followed by a skin-barrier wipe. Let each layer dry completely before putting the pouch back on.
- If itching persists for more than a day despite proper care, consult your ostomy nurse.

4. Reducing pouch tugging:
- Consider wearing an ostomy belt or support wrap to cradle the pouch and reduce the pull on the wafer.
- Some brands that offer supportive garments with internal pockets for the bag include Ostomy Secrets, Stealthbelt, and Pouchwear.
