Post-Surgery Recovery Struggles and Birthday Reflections

This topic is about someone who has just returned home after having abdominal surgery to create an ostomy. They are dealing with several post-surgery challenges, including nausea, trapped air, and diet concerns, especially as they recover around their birthday. Here are some insights and advice shared by others who have been through similar experiences:

- The person is no longer vomiting but feels anxious after a vomiting episode upon arriving home.
- They are managing pain from surgical incisions, anticoagulant injections, and intestinal gas or air pockets.
- To maintain bowel output and prevent blockages, they are consuming prune juice, taking laxatives, and sticking to a very restricted diet, mainly Jell-O and ramen noodles.
- They are unsure about eating birthday pizza due to concerns about cheese causing constipation.
- There is worry about persistent intestinal air and whether it will resolve with healing or remain a long-term issue.
- Occasional burning pain is causing concern, as they are unsure if it is due to implanted mesh or normal healing.
- They have unintentionally lost about 10 pounds due to limited food intake.

Additional observations and questions include:

- Trapped air occurs after nearly every drink, a new issue since the surgery.
- Eating slowly and chewing thoroughly helps reduce air intake but doesn't eliminate it.
- Ramen noodles cause the least discomfort, though they have cautiously added solid foods like pizza, sloppy joes, chicken, ground-turkey tacos, lasagna roll-ups, cake, and ice cream with some success.
- They are using baby-food fruit and vegetable pouches to boost nutrition but are bored with Jell-O.
- They have a strong dislike for NG tubes, having endured three insertions.
- Sleep has greatly improved at home compared to the hospital, though evening pain remains high.
- They experienced one messy stoma leak when output undermined the wafer.
- Overall, they are making progress with no medication vomiting, an active stoma, and a gradual increase in activity and diet variety.

Advice and insights from others include:

1. Intestinal gas and air pockets are common immediately after surgery and should resolve naturally as the gut fully "wakes up."
2. Chew food very thoroughly and eat slowly to minimize air ingestion and potential blockages, especially with dense foods like pizza.
3. Be cautious with ramen noodles, as they can be hard to digest for some ostomates. Consider researching the downsides of ramen noodles.
4. Introduce more nutritious, easily digested options such as yogurt for gut soothing and probiotics, or juiced/blended fruits and vegetables.
5. If whole foods are too challenging, consider juicing or puréed alternatives to provide vitamins while the intestine recovers.
