Leaking Ostomy: Seeking Advice for Belly Button Issues

This topic is about dealing with leaks from an ostomy due to a crease near the belly button. After surgery, the swelling has gone down, leaving a crease that causes the ostomy output to pool and lead to leaks. The person is using a thin barrier ring and a barrier extender but is still experiencing frequent leaks. Here are some suggestions to help manage this issue:

1. Fill the crease:
- Use stoma paste to fill in the dip. Apply it directly into the crease, smooth it out to be level with the surrounding skin, and then place the barrier ring or wafer on top. Use just enough paste to even out the area.

2. Build up the barrier ring:
- You can make one side of the barrier ring thicker by overlapping the ends of the ring.
- If overlapping makes the center hole too small, cut pieces from a second ring and stack or shape them to fill the crease.
- If the barrier ring is too thin, you can double up entire rings.
- Warm and mold the rings with your fingers to fit an oval-shaped stoma. You can gently stretch them without needing scissors.

3. Use supplementary supports:
- Reinforce low spots with barrier strips, extenders, or small pieces of the ring.

4. Manage pouch pressure:
- Seal the wafer filter with stickers or tape to keep some air in the bag, which helps prevent output from being forced behind the wafer. You can "burp" the bag as needed to release excess air.
- Consider using pouches that are made without filters to help manage pressure better.
