Seeking Advice - Struggling to Firm Ab-area Post-Stoma Placement

This topic is about the challenges some people face in strengthening their abdominal muscles after having stoma surgery. If you're in a similar situation, here are some helpful tips and insights that might guide you on your journey to rebuilding core strength:

1. Before starting any exercise routine, it's important to consult with your stoma nurse or a qualified postoperative physiotherapist. They can recommend exercises that are safe and won't put stress on your stoma or cause hernias.

2. Consider trying a leg-lift routine to help recondition your core:
- Lie on your back and raise both legs so your feet are about 18 inches (45 cm) off the floor.
- Use your legs as "weights" for your abdominals by moving and holding them in different positions.
- Hold each position until it starts to feel uncomfortable, then relax.
- Change up the sequence to keep your workout interesting.
- If you have or are prone to a parastomal hernia, start with a hernia belt and remove it as your strength improves. Some people notice better muscle tone and reduced bulging after about a month.

3. Don't skip warm-up and cool-down exercises. They are crucial for preventing injuries and helping your muscles recover.

4. There are online resources that can be very helpful. For example, a YouTube video with the code "rjXydhvWH_M" demonstrates leg-based abdominal exercises. You can also search for "abdominal exercises for hernias" to find more guided routines.

5. Explore alternative exercise modalities:
- Pilates classes, starting twice a week and increasing to three times, along with gentle yoga, can be beneficial. Some people start these about three weeks after surgery and find them helpful in steadily rebuilding core strength, even if there's some initial discomfort.
- Some individuals try the Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT), although experiences with its effectiveness can vary.
