Stoma Issues: Sudden Pain and Swelling, Should I Call My Nurse?

This topic is about someone experiencing sudden pain, swelling, and cramps around their stoma, and they are unsure whether to contact their stoma nurse for advice. Here are some helpful insights and advice shared by others:

1. A sudden slowdown in stoma output, accompanied by pain and swelling, might indicate a partial blockage.

2. Some self-help measures you can try include:
- Stop eating solid foods immediately.
- Keep yourself hydrated by drinking clear fluids. Warm tea, fruit juice, or a small amount of cranberry juice might help loosen thick output, often referred to as "pancaking."
- Lie down and gently roll from side to side, massaging around the stoma area to encourage movement.

3. It's important to seek urgent medical care if:
- The pain becomes worse.
- You start vomiting.
- Your symptoms do not improve. In such cases, go to the hospital or contact your stoma nurse or doctor without delay.

The person experiencing these symptoms has already scheduled a doctor's appointment for the next day, as they are feeling unwell with a headache, rapid stoma output, and a racing heart.
