Daily Struggle with Pain Post-Ileostomy at 80

This topic is about an 80-year-old individual who is dealing with persistent abdominal pain and struggles with weight loss after having ileostomy surgery. The pain starts after the first meal of the day and lasts until around noon, making mornings particularly challenging. Despite efforts to gain weight, the person remains at 125 pounds, down from a healthier range of 160-200 pounds, which has led to weakness and difficulty in performing daily activities. Various medical evaluations have not pinpointed the cause, though one doctor suspects adhesions but advises against further surgery due to age-related risks. The individual is looking for support and ways to find relief.

Here are some suggestions and insights that might help:

1. Consider increasing protein intake to help rebuild tissue and support weight gain. This can be done through ready-to-drink protein shakes or protein powders.

2. A product called JUVEN, a specialized nutritional powder from Abbott Laboratories, might be beneficial. Taking it twice daily has helped others in similar situations regain appetite, strength, and weight.

3. Try eating breakfast immediately upon waking up to help reduce early-morning abdominal discomfort.

4. If adhesions are suspected and the pain becomes unbearable, it might be worth discussing the possibility of surgical lysis of adhesions with a healthcare provider, even considering age. There are now anti-adhesion barrier wraps available that can help reduce the chance of recurrence.

5. If surgery is not an option, reaching out to Hospice for palliative support could provide comfort and advocacy to ensure the best possible quality of life.
