Post-Op BMs - Passing More Normally Than in Bag?

This topic is about a person who recently had a colostomy due to a cancer-related issue and is experiencing unexpected and frequent bowel movements through the rectum. This situation is causing significant discomfort and concern. Here are some insights and advice that might be helpful:

1. After a colostomy, it's not unusual to have some rectal output as the remaining colon clears out. However, having 12 to 20 bowel movements a day with pain is not typical and should be reviewed by a healthcare professional.

2. The patient is experiencing pain similar to what they felt before surgery, lasting several hours after eating. This is causing severe fatigue, disrupted sleep, and difficulty with daily activities.

3. The surgeon has suggested that the output might be mucus, but the patient believes it is stool. They have been referred to a pain-management clinic for further assistance.

4. There is an oncologic plan in place, which includes the placement of a port for chemotherapy. The hope is that shrinking the tumor will help reduce the pain.

5. For managing pain, it is important to work closely with oncology or pain-management specialists. Bringing a partner to appointments can help communicate the severity of the situation. If current pain medications are not effective, it may be necessary to adjust the treatment plan.

6. A power-injectable port, like a PowerPort, can be beneficial for chemotherapy and other treatments, as it is more comfortable and spares the veins.

7. Coping strategies include conserving energy, accepting help with physically demanding tasks, and being mindful of mood changes due to chronic pain and fatigue. It's important to lean on support from loved ones and employers during this challenging time.
