Ostomates in Sports: What's Your Experience & Advice?

The topic at hand is about getting back into sports after having ostomy surgery. If you’ve recently had this surgery and are wondering when you can return to activities like kayaking, snow-shoeing, aerobics, or swimming, you’re not alone. Here are some shared experiences and advice from others who have been in your shoes:

1. One person, who had an ileostomy relocation and hernia repair, started getting back to horseback riding activities just five weeks after surgery. They were able to muck out stables and ride, and they continue to participate in hunting, dressage, and showing ponies across the country.

2. Another individual has been actively involved in sports like rugby, hill-walking, cycling, sledging, and squash, even with an ostomy. They played front-row rugby from the age of 30 to 47.

3. Many people have successfully returned to a variety of vigorous sports. The main challenge they mention is managing stoma appliance changes in communal changing rooms.
